Upvote/Downvote
Add a way to upvote and downvote comments on discussions? That way we can express the way we feel about a comment...

Why ? You already have a search discussions feature that nobody bothers to use.

Or you could use the search feature to discover that this has been posted a number of times and its not happening because all it leads to is spam and other negative stuff.

Short version, they had it on the old forums, it was abused, it will not be coming back.

Long version, use the search feature.

its been asked for, and no one has come up with a good reason. the upvote/downvote would be abused and make the forums less usefull.

i dont like you (down votes every post...)
I think that was funny (upvotes replies that had nothing to do with the discussion)
etc....
etc...
etc...

the up/down vote system is a terible idea. It would only add to the toxcity of the community forums. This is not Reddit where your in a bubble of people that all agree with you. This is the real world where people will have there own opions and should be allowed to say them with out getting there post dog piled in to oblivion.
A very bad idea and would be abused by many that have alt accounts and is not needed.

I'd be in favour of a "like/thumbs up" button that isn't actually linked to anything in a functional sense, just as a way to say "hey, good post" without clogging up a thread.

As long as the only person who sees that its clicked is the person who clicked it, than sure. But if it produced any kind of number or anything identifiable that anyone else can see that can be used for a "see I have this amount, I'm trust worthy", its just going to be abused.

And if no one else can see it, its pretty pointless as we will be getting lots of complaints "I pressed this but nothing happened" and "I pressed this why can't people see it, they need to be able to see it... MAKE IT SO PEOPLE CAN SEE IT!!" kind of posts.

Upvote downvote comment feature will just be used as a way to insult someone and make them feel bad or to troll people and steam will become more toxic and turn into imgur.

at least whats what i think

Do you mean “the only person”, or “the only person other than the post author”? Hopefully the latter, otherwise you’re not even communicating, which is, indeed, clearly utterly pointless.

You could keep it invisible to everyone but the author whose post is being “liked”, sure, though I’m not convinced it’s necessary. As long as we’re not talking about a central, profile-connected reputation feature (and I, at least, am not), then it’s just another thumbs up button on user generated content, which exist already all over Steam, from the activity feed to screenshots, guides, the workshop, reviews etc. If people want to point to a bunch of disparate numbers and use them to try and scam others, they can already do so.

It wont happen for 2 reasons:

1- Downvotes would hurt the snowflakes

2- People exposing the questionable business practices of either Valve or developers would get upvoted and make them lose money.

NO.

Use the search function.

We have "mark post as answered." That is enough.
