Change Steam account name
Xbox users have had the option for over a decade. Now that Playstation users will be getting the option I believe it is ridiculous for Steam users to still not have this feature.

LIVE and PSN use your account name also as your display name. You can change your display name at will on Steam for a long time.

The OP is talking about the login name. In the begining, steam users had to use their email account name as a steam login name. Since then most users with email names have changed their emails number of times.

It be a good option to be able to change our login names.

There is no need for a changing username, no other than you will ever see the username, you can change profilename at will.

No, it wouldn't. Too many people already have to go to support for forgetting their login name, letting them change it makes it even more likely they won't remember what they changed it too. Also, hackers would love to have yet one more thing they can change on an account to make it harder for the actual account owner to get their account back.

Plus, Steam has already said that your login name is propogated through too many databases and it would take to many resources (time & money) to build and test a way to make sure that changing it properly does so through their entire system without fail. Because a single point of failure could completely break someones account and that would take even more time & money to fix.

But nobody see it but you, and only when logging in. It's not displayed on the Steam client like it was in the past.

The first steam accounts you had to use your email address as a user name. My account was the 22781 steam account to be created and I still use a email address. I would love to change this.

Valve does not have the ability to let users change their login names.

This was looked into long ago, and even then it was decided that it was going to be both very costly to implement and had a high risk of breaking an account if the name change didn't propogate through all the databases properly.

So far we are three in this topic, so I guess we are not that rare.

It's not really the cost to make it an option, it's the fact that even a tiny error in propogating the change through their various systems could completely break someones account, which would be both costly and time consuming to fix not just the account, but troublleshooting what went wrong and trying to fix it.

It's not a practical thing for Valve. It would cost them millions if not hundreds of miullions of dollars to implement and that's just from the direct costs, not counting losses due to the inevitable service outages that would come with such a move. And then there's the increased security risk such thing cause.

Hackers and hijackers would have one more way to make it harder to get your account back.

I never understood why so many people fret about their login name. No one else can see it. Heck set steam to auto login and you'll hardly see it.
