I only honestly saw 1 obscene PP i don't think allowing GIFs will have everyone post porn on their profile.
Also you might want to look up the Steam rules there is more than just porn that is forbidden and sadly it is all to often we see users that insist on breaking those rules.
There is a 100% chance it will be abused. It takes long enough now to get just a static image that breaks the rules removed, it will take longer to get one that is animated. Instead of just looking at it and saying "yup that breaks the rules" they will have to sit there and watch it.
There are lots of idiots that will put seizure inducing gifs in and of course Valve would be blamed for allowing them in the first place and no there is no way to stop them other than not allowing animated stuff to begin with.
150+ million active accounts, 300+ million accounts in total. 400ish people who work at valve who are the only ones would could edit someones profile and most of them do not work support so would not be able to do that anyway.
But the biggest reason why this might never happen is because there are many games which no longer have developers attached to them that use the jpgs in their games and the animated gifs would actually break those games.
Course you would have discovered all this if you had used the search feature.
Here's the gist: what good is it to make something if you 99 % of users just opt out of it?
GIF avatars are annoying as ♥♥♥♥ and no game will ever support them, so what's the point?
I guess we should remove all trading since it can be abused then.
It being annoying is your opinion and it being "100% abused" is just some baseless exhaggeration you say just to try to make your opinion objective truth.
Many forums allow GIFs, and guess what you don't see a lot of people abusing the system.
So they will have to sit there and watch a series of images that rarely lasts more than 3 seconds if a proper file size limit is implemented. It does not sound like a massive loss of time to me.
The seizure-inducing gif argument is fallacious. As i answered to the other poster, by your logic we should completely remove trading as there are lots of scammers around.
If valve lacks the staff to properly moderate their multi-billion earning platform that's not my issue and that should not cut me away from using certain features that are considered normal in majority of the internet.
The argument of the game-breaking gif gets the same answer as the seizzure-inducing one.
I already used the search tool and i made a new post because i did not read any single valid argument against the enablement of gifs as profile pics. And i did not anwer on the older ones because there is something called thread necromancy and it's ususally taken as trolling.
Should we remove VR features? I'm fairly sure that a low percentage of steam user use those.
Clearly, those features are made for those that want to use them.
Not to mention the "99%" of users not using them is once again an exaggherated number you made up to back up your opinion as objective truth once again.
Thank you all for your understanding.
No matter you like it or not, it's still fact, that it will get abused.
At least with profile artwork showcases, we can choose not to go to profiles while on limited data. Can’t really tell people to not go to forums, because many people come here to seek help for their technical issues.
So unless this is 100% optional and the default option is set to “static avatars”, I don’t see this happening.
Even really simple gifs of 2-3 images would actually allow for a lot of customization.
In a later post you mention no bigger than 1 meg in size, do you even realize how long a 1 meg gif can be? Its just say its longer then 3 seconds depending on its size.
Also 3 seconds is 3 times longer than they need to determine if a static image breaks the rules.
Glad you think a legit medical issue is just a fallacious argument. It doesn't take long for a flashing image to trigger some one with epilepsy to have a seizure. Just seconds for them to lock onto it and not be able to look away from it.
Scammers and scams can be avoided, by sticking to just the one trade window. There is no need for steam people to go around trying to find them. That would be a waste of time. And once someone is scammed and the person is reported almost nothing is done. It takes a number of reports before someone gets trade banned and before that they have to be checked out.
A seizure inducing gif is something that has to be taken care of right away, its a drop everything and take care of it kind of thing because you are worried about the medical heath of someone. Because guess what, a seizure can actually kill someone, specially if there is no one else around to help them. Being scammed can't.
Even the 2 to 3 image ones (you suggest) can be used to cause issues for people.
And yes there are people who will post crap like that just to cause issues. I wonder if you heard about the case of a person intentionally sending a seizure inducing gif to another person knowing that they had photo sensitive epilepsy. https://www.cnet.com/news/kurt-eichenwald-twitter-epileptic-seizure-fbi-arrest/ (if you don't trust cnet, its easy enough to find info about it on google or some other search engine.)
Actually it is your issue if you like cheap games. The more people they need to hire to police the discussion areas the less money they make. The less they make means a higher chance that they have to take a bigger cut. If they take a bigger cut the devs more then likely raise their prices to take home the same amount they are taking now.
And interesting that you don't seem to care about games being broken because animated gifs were added in. I'm sure it would be a different issue if suddenly a game you enjoyed suddenly stopped running because it could not load an animated gif.
You didn't see a single valid argument? Heck the "gif files can make some games unplayable" is more than enough of a valid argument. Potentially deadly seizure inducing gifs is more than enough of a valid argument. The size that they take up on the server is more than enough of a valid argument. It talking mods and steam admins far longer to determine if an animated image breaks the rules then a static image is more than enough of a valid argument.
Just because you don't see them as valid arguments doesn't mean they aren't. It just means you either didn't actually look or don't care about others.
And actually you can post to old threads be it 1 week old or 5 years old IF you are not spamming it and have something to add to the argument.
