A warning that there is not enough disk space for updates/install unpacks
TL;DR - games / patches often require more space to unpack & install than the download size. Therefore a warning if there is not enough space for the game/patch to unpack & install would be nice.

As it is, the only indicator of this is a loop in the downloads that shows no network activity and only an "installing / verifying" loop that continues forever.

Today, I had an issue with a game update:

that I had to place into the game's discussions:

and further escalate to their bug-tracker:

Steam was reporting that there were corrupt or missing files as the installing/verifying loop continued (launching the game when ready option did point to the files).

However, it was simply a case that the install required about 4mb more free space than was available on the disk...

Once the disk was cleared from 3gb space (almost twice the 1.8gb patch download) to 10gb - the game quickly downloaded the "missing/corrupt" files and works fine.

Had the Steam installer or verification indicated that the game could not successfully install due to a lack of space (which ought to have been evident by watcing the game folder "flick" between having required files and being almost empty) - it would have saved an hour of troubleshooting and me looking like a numpty.

Perhaps, even, if the install did delete the game and redownload the full thing - it would have been enough space - if the downloader did notice that there was not enough disk-space available to complete the unpack and install.

I think I opted out of the beta a while ago, MrLogic.

The loop simply is caused by Steam seeing there is enough space to download the package/patch installer, but not accounting that there is not enough space to unpack and install it.

The error that is thrown blames a corrupt download or missing file (only if "launch when ready" is selected will it show), which led me to believe this was the reason.

It is not the case - I have tested it on other updates by pausing them and filling up the disk so that there is enough space for the download, but not an unpack and install.

The same loop occours.

If there is an install/validate loop - it is only a matter of clearing some disc space.
Appears that a 1.8gb patch requires more than 3gb space to download, unpack and install.

Apparently, it needed an extra 4mb only :)

Just a bit of a heads-up, Final Fantasy XII requires 30GB of HDD space to update, as the developers opted to put all the game data in a single file.
