Would it make sense to allow the use of .MP4 files as a steam artwork?
you can achieve more with an mp4 file for the size in regards to animation since its a compressed file type in comparison to png based gif.

Heck no, I don't even want gifs or PNGs or any other form of animated stuff on profiles, its annoying and sucks up a lot of peoples bandwidth.

mp4s just open up the ability for abuse. Uploading large files and ones with sound, also copyrighted material, porn and other crap.

No thank you.

For one it doesn't eat up much bandwidth in this day and age of pretty decent internet a gif or the equivalent size in an mp4 is nothing. i dont see how its annoying its just added customisation surely which can only be good? steam could even make money off this somehow XD . And how does mp4s open up any more abuse than a gif or picture? you can still upload copyrighted stuff and porn etc anyway so that point is pretty invalid imo. If gifs are allowed why not mp4s? like i said you can achieve much more with the same allowed size or ever so slightly larger.

mp4's

Offer the Option to Upload Videos, even ones containing Sound...

I would not want to deal with hearing Sounds on a STEAM Profile Page...

Nor would I want to be able to hear Music when visiting ones page, either...

Why not? It sounds like a great idea?

Simply because it could disrupt my Game, or could be distracting
away from Gaming, or it could simply disrupt my own Music
playing over a Game I am listing during...

Things like this... Make mp4's a bad idea for Peoples Profiles...

you could easily have a function to disable the sound element or it could be default or locked to disabled so i don't see an issue i do however understand that though and it would be potentially annoying but that can be minimised easily or removed completely

Hey I'm glad you have unlimited bandwidth... not everyone does. Even in the US there are still people on dial up because thats all they can get in their area. Not to mention lots and lots of data caps that are pretty low when you consider everything else that people play and watch. Then there are lots of people who can only get the net because they have tethered their systems to a phone and it sucks up that bandwidth.

MP4s are much bigger than gifs. A 30 second 500 pixel by 500 pixel mp4 is going to much larger than the same size gif. Then you also have to deal with the sound.

And yes its already bad enough that people upload porn and other crap with jpgs and gifs. They don't need something else to worry about. Personally I wish they would get rid of the gifs and other animated crap that people can already put on their profiles.

Only way I could ever see this happening is if they limit the size of the upload, nothing more than 1 meg. They would also need to have them not playing by default. And no sound by default either.

But I'd rather not see that crap be able to be uploaded to people profiles. If you want myspace go get a myspace account.

Not everyone in area area of the world has fast speeds and no data caps. I have 200mb/s connectionwith unlimited data and I wouldn't want this. Bad enough with all the auto play crap over the net as it is.

If you want to upload artwork in mp4 or any other format maybe look into a platform specifically for this and then link to it.

I miss the old days of the internet when the images were static and people didn't discover the nefarios <media> tag by Microsoft yet. Peaceful times.
Yeah, i'm an old fart in internet terms. Sue me.

You mean the times when websites were made to be data efficient instead of pretty with all the added junk and scripts? I miss those days to. May just be my memory but I sure some websites take longer to load now than they did on weaker hardware and dial up modems ha

So you believe that a mp4 would be larger? You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, and considering steam has a cap on the file size anyway its not going to affect space being taken up or load times related to internet speeds. The following links are just to a sample animation as an example.

This link is for an mp4 file of 1mb : https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/513579895356653578/618537003176165418/1mb.mp4

This link is for a gif of the same animation with compression thats 7mb : https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/513579895356653578/618537906453086220/4654565.gif

And this gif again the same animation with better compression is 4mb : https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/513579895356653578/618538506163191838/4654565.gif

All of the gifs are without sound too which again is less data to add to this. Also there is a web browser feature that if the video doesn't have audio it will be auto played, and if it has audio it it wont be auto played anyway so steam could easily implement this. So what were you saying about an mp4 taking up more space?

With the use of porn or copyrighted material well... all of that is against steams TOS anyway so how is it opening it up anymore? Since if people do it can easily do it anyway so like I said that before its not adding to the problem just allows more creative people to do more with their profile. I don't see how you think its crap honestly you can do some cool things and your profile is for showing off to some degree of what games you've played and what things you've made.

Again like i said steam already limits the size of uploads anyway so that's no issue with doing the same with a mp4. also, who uses Myspace anyway? like what the actual...

Times a changing most AAA games take up significant bandwidth if they are online over the period of time of use, let alone the actual game files taking over 20gb some even upwards of 70-100gb just to download and you're complaining about the use of a small gif or mp4?

Edit : to clean up some of the grammatical errors and make some of the things I said clearer.

also as a frame of reference this is a screen shot of the different compression used and the last one is an uncompressed gif 81mb ...

can anyone give me a good reason why it is a bad idea to implement? if not ... steam if you're watching please implement it <3 if not soon then with the new UI update you are working on please :)

Because artworks are not videos. And moving stuff on a site is incredibly annyoing. That's more than enough reason.
AwkwardLizard 4 SEP 2019 a las 13:16
Artwork, or works of art are not solely limited to static pictures, you can get art in video form and there are many definitions of art if you want to go down this route of argument. I don't see why everyone is hating on "moving stuff" so much, its a profile its not like the average steam user is going to repeatedly go on the same profile or look at 10s or 100s of profiles a day. And even if that's the case whats such a big issue? As I've already said you could just implement it with a feature that allows you to turn off the autoplay if you hate it that much.
