Integrate Discord into Steam
I think it’s time that Discord is built into Steam. Discord is far more superior than any other chat system out there and is only getting better and Valve has no intention of making their chat better they just offer the most basic (When I think of it now it’s actually kind of sad that Valve didn’t make their version of Discord first and they call themselves a gaming platform). Discord has a overlay (barley) but it’s not supported with many games while Valve has their overlay all across all games supported on Steam. If Discord took on everything in Steam that is social like their chat, groups, activity feed, maybe discussions as well revamped them. Then everything would be so much more usable and there would be a point of them even being there in the first place. Especially their activity feed I think that’s Valve’s plan to try to make a Facebook for gamers or something and it miserably failed.

No thank you. I don't need the extra bloat on the client.

Please use the search function to see the many other threads like this and add to them.

then ask the discord people to either bring it to Steam as an application, or have Valve buy them out..

Valve usually waits for companies to contact them first..

and I am probably showing my age here but, does no one use Ventrilo anymore? I have only recently heard people mentioning "discord", and back when I played online games more often than I do now Ventrilo was just about everyones VOIP of choice..

Another one of these threads.... people need to learn how to use the search feature, BEFORE posting their idea.

I and many others don't want all the extra crap built into steam to support, not only just this one chat program, but every other chat program out there because thats what people would want if you jam discord in there.

We don't need or want extra bloat. You want to use those programs, then use those programs, they don't need to be part of steam.

+1 for go to bed, Timmy.
Like already said you'll have to contact the owners of Discord and ask them to bring it to the Steam client.

I wouldn't mind it being in Steam as I do like it more than any other chat program out there now but don't have a problem using Steam chat/voice chat like others do.

Okay.. query.: Why is this need to be integrated into steam. What functional difference would this make?

Literally everything what does Steam have to offer? Nothing really only thing they give you is basic chat and voice chat for just getting people's attention while in game with the overlay then they move onto their software. But why Discord [discordapp.com] (Things they don’t have in the list are video chat and screenshare) should be built in for one they actually maintain their software and update it and add new features that the community wants. Better to have more things built into Steam so they can be optimised better rather than having so many background apps running using memory and CPU.

They don't suddenly stop using CPU and Memory when they get integrated, they would still continue to use nearly as much as they use now. So its not going to be as optimized as you think it will be.

Also what about the rest of us who don't what that extra bloat to take up the extra cpu and ram? And you haven't mentioned yet about all the other chat software that people will want integrated into steam, thats going to take up more resources for stuff you are not going to use.

Maybe if you could not download stuff for the steam client. Don't want voice chat? Don't download voice chat. Don't want Big Picture Mode? Don't download BPM. Don't want discord or Ventrilo or any other program like that, don't download the module for it. Then I would not care. But as it is, you can't do that and anything that gets integrated into Steam causes more bloat.

The issue though, is that with having modules like that, you would open security holes that hackers would start poking into and trying to figure out ways to exploit them.

So I doubt anything like that would ever happen and I don't ever see 3rd party programs getting integrated into Steam because of the whole bloatware issue.

i like using discord to chat with some select friends, but these people have legit concerns about cpu bloat, so i'll be neutral on this
