If you want to review a game from another platform, use the platform you have the game on.
You want to rate a game you bought on iTunes: rate it on itunes
What you bought elsewhere, even if its the same game has no relevance to anything.
And no way to know if you do own anything on another platform.
First, there is no way for Valve to verify you actually own said game on another platform.
This can lead to abuse issues where many fake reviews can be posted in order to either promote a very bad game or sabotage a very good game thus trsulting in either the closure of a very good small developer or inflated sales of a horrible game. What is to prevent a less than reputable person/ organization/developer from creating multiple fake accounts and doing just that. Sure, the admins could ban/delete the fake accounts after the fact but the damage would already have been done.
Second, The same game on different platforms may not play the same.
I have two examples of this personally. I own the game Plague Inc. on both steam and iPad. The main difference between the two versions were the ammount of microtransactions on the iPad version. While I liked the iPad version, it was extremely hard to advance without additional purchases and therefore I stopped playing that version. This may have changed with a subsequent update but, again, I had already switched to the Steam version.
The other game I will use as an example is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I have this game on PS3 as well as Steam. While this is an excellent game, the issues Bethesda had with the PS3 version are exceptionally well known.Due to this it would be unfair to rate the Steam version of Skyrim while only have played the PS3 version. Another point is the ammount of mods available for the Steam version where none are available for PS3. This, however, should not be used as a basis of rating the core game anyway. It is just an option available for some games available on Steam and not on some other platforms.
So, again, I say no to being able to rate games on Steam when you have only palyed it on another platform.
- Making it as not having purchased it on Steam keeps it seperate no it has absolutely no bearing on the Steam reviews.
- It could easily be verified by linking your iTunes account.
But at least they know that you own the game and ran it for at least 5 mins. Which is a good deal m ore than they'd know foir what you suggest. They also know whether you purchased directly from them, or from a key seller.
WHich basically means you can say anything about any game... what would be the point of that?
Not every platform links with steam.
And for the times when they aren't identical? Steam allows you to review games on steam, not games on another platform.
But open to abuse none the less, hence why it's not a feature. As far as not ever playing a game to review it, is not an easy hurdle to jump over. But that's neither here nor there, point being is your suggestion is in fact open to abuse.
Then why even have the option to review another the game for another platform when he has no bearing on steam reviews? The way they keep the "not having purchased it on steam" separate is not having the option at all.
And you know this how? I ask because you said it could be easily done and I'm very curious how that is accomplished according to you.
Just look at Battlefront 2 reviews. I'm betting 90% of those negative reviews have played the game.
The same goes for any other game that gets massively downvoted on Metacritic.
With that, there is no reason what so ever to even make it possible.
Create a group here on Steam, there you can post about all the games you have on itunes, or use metacritic, they are open for all.
BTW.
A review for a mobil version is of no use to people who think about buying a pc-game, they are two very different animals.
Currently, Steam has a thing appended to reviews made by people who received their copy of the game for free. This allows people who are reading the review to see that the person may be biased.
With that in mind, it would be simple to append the following to reviews made by people who don't own the product on Steam: "Review written by a user who does not own this product on Steam". That way, people reading the review would be able to better discern whether or a not a person is being honest in their review.
Additionally, the option to filter Steam reviews would be necessary. You would need to be able to filter reviews to see just the ones by people who own the product, just ones by people who don't, or all reviews visible.
Finally, reviews of "recommended/not recommended" made by people who don't own the product would not be included in the averages that Steam makes, to say whether a product's recent reviews and all reviews are "mostly positive, very positive", etc.
