Games For Leasing
Hey guys!

I want you to implement feature for game developers: leasing their games.

For example: IO Interactive developed Hitman Blood Money in 2006, and surely, they have not so much sales now as they wish. And I'm sure they can get it.

If you, Steam Dev Team, give them opportunity to make a bulk of games that can be leased for a fixed monthly price - all of us will be happy!

1) Steam Dev Team will increase total income from leasing games.
2) Users will play more and different games. Pay less, get more.
3) Developers will get more money from their old games by leasing games.

What do you think? Is it possible?

I don't think that's possible, just go to best buy or whatever store still lets you rent games, i'm sure they have pc games that work with steam

this has been suggested literraly 100s of times already, search the forum.
not worth the hassle for valve and not a single dev/publisher would go for it. theres lots of reasons why and technically you already rent the game to have it placed in your library so you can play it - you don't own any games on steam.

EA does this with origin access, but they own all the games involved, use it as a means to push dlc sales, and use it to get people to subscribe to their service.

I could see it happening here, but it would likely be split up in several subscription bundles, rather than one big one.

Why developers wouldn't go? You as developer published a game 10 years ago, the chance of sell that game now is tending to zero.
As user, I don't want to own games, I just want to play DIFFERENT GAMES without any limitation (i.e. buying games just for test, and then do refund If I don't like it).

let's just look at just one thing; pricing - what would be your model for renting a game or a bundle?
you used HM - Blood Money as an example which costs $8 to buy.

you assume it's an old game so no one is buying or playing, you are wrong. you can either have the hassle of of implementing a rental system or putting the game on sale (publishers decide which games and when a game is on sale, not valve).

it has 40 - 100+ regular players

the last it was on sale it was $1.34 (-85%) - is it cheaper to buy or rent?

bear in mind no one is going to rent games that aren't popular or AAA.

devs wont go for it because of the hassle and because they can promote dlc etc at the same time as a sale to boost sales. they can do this many times a year. they make more money from selling on release then putting on sale many times, including it in a bundle or promoting dlc.

i could go on with stats but i really can't be bothered tbh, search the forum for other posts and click the link below to see the stats yourself and look at other games.

there are also techincal and legal implications from renting games in different countries (regional pricing etc) - including having a separate agreements and copyrights from different publishers for the same game, different versions of the same game etc.

You're already leasing games when you purchase them. Without a monthly fee. Dude... think before you post.

I'm surprised Steam has not offered some kind of subscription service yet as it seems to of been successful for others that have tried it in the media industry for books, tv shows, movies, music, and yes even game services like PSN, Xbox Live, Nintendo's thing, EA's Origin Access, Humble Bundle's monthly and trove access, Gamefly (streaming), PSNow (on PC streaming), and GOG's rumored upcoming service.

Publishers can enter whatever games into a bundle as much as they want. They also have the option to have subscriptions on their items like monthly fees....

.... its already there for them if they wanted to do it!

Take a look at the prices for PS Now. Then take a look at the prices during sales on PC. No one would lease a game for EUR 9.99 for 24 h if it's on sale for EUR 5 every other week.

I think this is why they settled on the "Family Sharing" option instead.

even if there was a sub service you can bet you would see everything except not popular games everybody wants

Crappy asset flipping devs would have a field day with such

Actually I forgot about that. Some MMOs do have this recurring feature. and if you attach asubscription to a bundle.

And yeah a subscription service doesn't work out as well as you think. The biggest issue is that quite frankly, you have no control over what you have access to. Just as neflixc can add and remove programs from their service at any time.

BTW since humble bundle is an affliated carity those troves... well they do count as chariutable donations which in many states and countries, counts as a tax credit.
