No seriously - PLEASE can we set a default controller config?

Lets say I want 'Gamepad' as my default config for my PS4 controllers. Why on earth can't I do that? Do I really need to set that configuration on each and every shortcut and game I have in my Steam library?

There should be a default already. I only ever had to check the PS4 box in Big Picture on time and the controller workes fine with most games. Very few need any tweaking done in the BP controller config menu.

I'm bumping this as I was coming here just to ask how to do this. Finally realized the reason I couldn't auto-target in Dark Souls 3 was it had loaded some funky template, changing it to "Gamepad" fixed everything (including other issues I didn't realize were controller related). Why is Gamepad not the default for every game and how can I set this?

Default controller config

For Steam / PS4 / other controllers that are configurable, I like to be able to select a Template, and then check a box that says something like 'Make this Template the default for all games'. So whenever a new game is added, Steam applies that Template to that controller type (e.g. all PS4 controllers).

At the moment, Steam makes assumptions about the game / app and then applies a Template based on that (often it's a keyboard+mouse mapping template, because Steam doesn't realize that the app / game has native 360 controller support, for instance).

There is no way. Unless Steam knows for certain the game has full controller support, it'll apply some keyboard+mouse template. They need to allow us to set a default template.

How is this not a thing? I'd rather once in a while run into an issue where the game doesn't have full controller support than have every single game default to some goofy remapped config.
