Alternatives to downloading a purchased game
When the internet connection is slow enough, it takes days or even months to download a purchased game via steam. Many of us don't even purchase a game looking at it's size and considering the time to download it. The size of games are increasing day by day. But I have an idea in mind:

After purchasing a game, you can directly download the game. Or alternatively, I feel it would be better if you can ask steam to send you a DVD of the installer of the game (of course you will pay the additional charges of the DVD and delivery). This is cheaper and less time consuming than subscribing for a better and faster internet connection. This is because internet service in many places are still quite expensive. In case of updates to the game, the same thing can be allowed. Either you can download it or get the DVD. Though, in case of updates people will prefer downloading as the size of updates are smaller than the original game.

Go to your local store that carries games or look on line and see if there is a physical copy of the game. If there is not you have no other option.

Even if there is a physical box for a game being sold that does not mean you will still not have to download the whole thing. Take the new Doom for example, it comes with 1 disc, which is just basically filled with none game data. You put the key code into steam and you start downloading.

The reason for this is because as you say, games are becoming larger and larger and the more discs there are, the more expensive it is to include physical media. There are no company out there that will burn discs for you and send you them.

If you were to somehow convince Valve to do this, expect to pay an extra 5 to 10 dollars per disc, plus shipping. Many of these large games would be running 4 to 15 discs or more per game and that would even be in a compressed setup.

So are you willing to pay at least another 25 to 75 dollars per game? I very much doubt that.

Forget about updates. Just think about game sizes. You'd need around 5 DVDs to install a 50 GB game (nominally more, but compression is luckily a thing still). Or you could use one BluRay. Which has the downside of costing more thanks to licensing and the fact the few gaming PCs actually have a BluRay reader.

If you're in a place with diualup, then you aren't doing much gaming anyway.

Which could easily cost you more than the game in delivery and customs fees.
And by the time you receive it it'll require an update, which you will have to PAY to get delivered home... By the time another update is needed.

I know pretty well how annoying updating on a slow connection can be. But physical delivery isn't the solution.
Exercising patience had proven to be a really useful ability over the years, personally.

You kidding? You're old enough to know that we, the "old guard" indeed did "much gaming" even before the broadband times.

But I get it, it's a lot easier to just go "LOL, loser" at people because they happen to have been born in a second world country.

This. There are tons of games that are 3 GB or less in size. Heck, some of the greatest games ever made are 3 MB or less in size.

That said...of course, it depends on what games you want to play. Maybe some smaller-sized substitutes may be of interest?

With regards to physical copies, Steam does all the stuff it does for so cheap because it doesn't ship physical copies. It'd be more expensive to publish physical copies en masse. And then it'd be even more expensive to make a disc-printing service just for custom orders.

There were games that came on 4 or 5 DVDs and back before there were high storage levels like DVDs there were once games that came on over TEN floppies, trust me I was that kid pressing the eject button. Some games even entertained you whilst installing the game with mini-games or an introduction to read as it installed.

A quick google and I found this thread,

However, if you just search for something like "game on most discs ever" or similar I am sure you can find the answers.

So there's no reason why a modern 40GB game could not still come on DVDs in a box, with a lovely 200+ page manual. If you want to see a wonderful manual in digital form, go look at Sowrd of the Samurai....worth reading on its own. Falcon 4.0's manual was also famous for content and size as well. Both go well over and above what you need to know to play and win the game.

Ten floppies? Ten? More like, thirty-seven. And then suddenly you misplaced #23 and you were screwed....

As for cost, I have to say that where a physical product and a digital version are available, the physical one is usually cheaper, sales on both sides ignored obviously. This is because there are farm more retailers of physical games than there are digital distribution platforms for each game....maybe 2, 3 max in almost all cases.

That's right - didn't want to specify such a high number as I hinestly could not remember the game in question or the actual number!!!

They do sometimes make special editions, but those are limited in number.

Did you mean manuals? IF so, that's great as I really miss massive 200+ page manuals. I used to read them on the way home in the car, or at my grandparents' house on Boxing Day / New Years' Day when I was separated from my beloved new games.
