Make steam verify game files before install
When installing a game make steam first check if there are game files in the HD, to later check if there is disk space.
Make someting like that:
gamesize - gamefilesindisk = x;
if x < free space disk = procced to instalation
else no disk space to proceed install

So I can at least play my alredy in disk 40GB game having 39 GB of free disk space, is it so hard to do that ???

Are you a steam developer? If so explain what is more inefficient than the current form of steam cheking game install. If not, just shut up

abut the idea i agree will be nice, even that it is recommended to keep some free space :P
as for when a huge update comes

For starters your files might be outdated or from a non-steam version. or may have been modified. if they are, they will need to be replaced. Now for repair it can work, but for installations. It's computationally more effecient to just download and replace all the files. Plus it grants the added assurance that all the files are of a matched set.

If you're hurting for HDD space, just uninstall something.

Sorry about my last post Start_Running. Thank you for the explanation
I just pissed of.
I used the example of 40GB vs 39GB free, but my case is with FEAR, I have a 60GB SSD in a notebook, copying the game to SSD and 11GB remaing free. (relatively to 60GB,
Is a good amount of free space), already deleted all possible data.
I tried to pause the installation of the game before steam verifying the files, then copy the files to the folder, then resume the process, even so at the end it results in a lack of disk space error msg.
I no longer have the FEAR manifest file to trick steam. (Google translator, sorry)

I'm not sure what the issue is

1) IF you actually stage the data properly Steam will attempt to use those file
2) Steam will reverify the game cache IF you stage the data properly
3) Assuming any files in the above fail, THEN it will download files, at which point it will pre-allocate all the download space before begninning the install.

If you are getting a disk space issue it means you didn't stage the data properly and its downloading and pre-allocating the game which is why you get the 'no disk space' problem

If you don't have the manifest, then Steam has to download the entire game over again. Your only option is

1) Begin the download
2) stop it
3) copy teh manifest file
4) Delete the install
5) Move the manifest file and the data to the approrpiate directroy
6) Reinstall the game which will use the local game data

When hit install, steam firsts check if there is disk space for the game, If the space in disk is great than the size of the game, it proceeds to search for available game files in steam folder, verify files and downloads those that are missing or incorrect.

In my case the game size its around 16GB and my hard disk have only 11GB free, making steam stop install with a no enough space on disk msg . In my second post I explained that I already tried to trick the verification system, but even with this steam seems to need to create the necessary disk space.

I have done this but it seems to me that a manifest file of a game already downloaded differs in some values from a manifest file of a game being downloaded. (Game size in disk, status, bytes to be donwloaded, and other values)

(Google translator, sorry)
