Steam Support is Crap!
Look nearly everytime I try to get a question answered I can't. You can't fill out most of the additional information required. Steam blocks you from asking anything unless you have those additonal infos. But there's no "does not apply" selection available.

Basically if Steam support can't answer a basic general question, it pretty worthless!

What exactly are you even asking? They make you fill that out for a reason.

Basic general questions are what the forums are for - Steam support is where you go when there is an issue with your account that the forums cannot help with.

As Satoru says - what are you asking about?

This time: I wanted to know if there's anyway to get a game that Steam sells that I bought prior to Steam's existance on my Steam account and up-dateable though my accout. Or if Steam required me to rebuy it. A simple general question, not answered anywhere else.

They require 7 subfields to be filled in for every question. There's ZERO ability to fill any subfield with "I don't know, does not apply, ect...". That makes the funtion near worthless.

You can tell exactly what anyone is asking by READING their actuall question.

Yeah 90% of the time I never get any responce to a forum submission. This is a rarity. If the forums actually helped....
I have no problems with that, just send the issue to Steam support and wait a few days...They contact you by email...

Steam supports list of Retail/CD keys that can be activated on Steam.

If your game is on that list then you can activate it using Games->Activate a product in Steam in the Steam client.

Ah but I can"t send it to Steam support because I don't have all 7 legitamate subfields. IF I COULD SUBMIT IT, I WOULD LOVE TO.

There are some games you can add to steam if you bought them retail, but not all of them will. If they were out before steam though, then you can not add them to your steam account unless they were a game made by Valve.

Also, try searching for a patch to the retail game if that is why you want to ad it. Steam and the retail are patched identicaly (as in the patches fix the same issues). You can just download it and play the game.

As for the fileds for support, just put in anything. They will forword it for you if they can't answer your question.

Mind Blown.

So you want a steam game that you brought prior to steam being in existance, you tell me how that makes sense no wonder there is no response they are all still deciphering what you are even asking for. I'm guessing what you mean is you bought a vavle game before steam's existance and you want it hooked into your steam account. The answer is no then.

It wouldn't let me fill in just anything.

How do you tell if it's now a Valve game?
sara_bear Nov 1, 2012 @ 8:09am
Tried basic and advanced search first. Even searched the forums before trying to ask.

And you second answer makes zero sense, since they still offer to sell me the game I already have. I'm not talking a game from 20 years ago.

Did you look at the steam support list of cd keys that can be activated that I posted above?
Spawn of Totoro Nov 1, 2012 @ 8:14am
Just because they sell it doens't mean they will allow it to be added to steam. It is up to the developer to allow a retail copy to be added to steam or not. If the game came out before steam, why allow it to b added at all?

Makes perfect buisness sense.

Thank you, I'll try that.
