Can't hear my friend on steam voice chat

When we start a call I cant hear him but he can hear me. My voice settings are fine. Is anyone else having this problem?

oh and also his voice meter is changing so i know he is talking

Speakers on? Plugged in? also try completely unpugging and plugging the wire to the computer as sometimes its not all the way in.
You may have also accidently hit the mute key on some of the fancier keyboards... or nudged the volume control from within Windows. There is also a volume setting for each "Application" under WinVisa/7 in the same volume control screen.
If your audio driver crashed, then reboot and see if you have any sound at all.

This is happening to me too. I talk with the same person on skype, and everything works fine there, so it's not a problem on his end, or mine. Something wrong with steam.

Do you have the required ports for Steam configured? This can cause such problems.

click on your speakers at the bottom right, then click mixer and change the steam volume. At least that work for me

My microphone(s) have never worked on steam. Tried different operating systems too. Works on everything else, I was thinking it might be permission issues or something is conflicting in the settings, but no dice.

Have you tried putting the output for your sound as default?
This is the same fix if your mic. isn't working on steam voice chat, so maybe this fix will also work.

This can be done by right clicking your speaker icon then select playback device. Check which one is the one you're currently using and right click that one and select make default.
