Unexpected shutdown of pc *Not overheating*
So I built a new gaming rig, have been using it for the past month roughly... a week ago I experienced an unexpected shutdown while in main menu of Rome Total War 2... didnt really think anything of it, had a bit of trouble getting it to reboot after playing with PSU. So yet again about an hour ago its shutting down again... and i was just about to resume and campaign in total war.. so I thought this is odd, I knew it wasn't overheating because i checked bios which stated CPU was at 32c and MOBO 39c, I ended up pulling off side case and aimed a fan at it to cool MOBO down to 35c. Next thing I went into Norton and performed some actions, and went to my performance tab and seen there was an issue with Rome Total war 2.. it said that i was using 100% of the CPU, Is this whats actually causing my pc to shut down on its own? Its just not possible with the CPU i have.. Iam playing on high graphics but still, here are my specs anyways.

i7 3930k six core
Asus Rampage Sabertooth x79
Gerforce GTX 780 SC
16 gb Corsair Vengence Pro
1050 Seasonic x series gold PSU
Thermaltake 2.0 Extreme

Any help would be appreciated, I just cant believe my CPU is being used at 100% especially when the times it did shut down i didnt even make it in game.

You'll have to go into more detail about "had a bit of trouble getting it to boot after playing around with the PSU". What exactly did you play with? And please explain what "did some actions in Norton" means.

Also, if you're checking your temps in BIOS then you're doing it wrong. You have to check your temps WHILE you're gaming, not while the computer is booted into BIOS.

Right, well my thermaltake 2.0 extreme fan control software doesnt work as I can see to get a driver for it. I didnt really do anything to psu, just checked all connections. I currently have the side of my case off with a fan at it... hasnt shut down yet and is def keeping it cool so idk what to think atm

And norton as in I cleaned the registry and disk optimization and scanned for viruses... a few cookies popped up lol

I'm seriously worried by the comment that your fan driver didn't work and that you have the side off with a fan blowing at it.

Does this mean that the Thermaltake fan isn't in operation at all?

If that's so, I'd stop using your computer immediately as having a fan pointed at it is NOT likely to do the job very well. You're at risk of destroying your CPU.

From this, it's highly likely it IS a shutdown due to overheating. I'd seriously recommend you contact Thermaltake and get the help you need THEN try again.

Found threads on other forums indicating thats its an issue with Rome total war 2, everything they explained is identical to the probelm iam having. Everything is working the way it should. All the fans are working also the fans on the radiator for liquid cooling, theres just no driver for the software that allows me to monitor the temp but it is working. I placed a fan directly at the MOBO and it lower the temp if that was the issue... probably 10 min being into rome total war, it shuts down.

If my liquid cooling wasnt working, it would have destroyed my cpu already.

Ah, that's a relief. I rather got the impression that when you said the driver wasn't working, you meant that resulted in the whole FAN not operating.

I'd certainly echo Shodan's suggestion as the next step, so if you try the Rome 2 fixes and you still get it, then I'd recheck what you did with the PSU.

On another note, I had a similar issue with World of Warcraft about 18 months ago - it would immediately turn my laptop off after random amounts of play time. No other game caused this problem, and even though I checked absolutely everything I could think of with this laptop, nothing seemed to be at fault.

After I went through Blizzard's dreadful support (or lack of), a couple of months later I eventually managed to get hold of someone at least a little knowledgeable who ended up blankly claiming that WOW "could never cause this issue". This was despite other users also professing the same thing. I asked to escalate the issue further and after a couple of further months, they just closed the tickets, so likewise I closed my account.

As it turns out, this laptop has never suffered this problem since and I use it every day for hours on end. Sometimes, computers can indeed suffer some bloody strange problems.

In any case, if you don't get it sorted, do get back to us.

Well hopefully, if it is the PSU.. that I can return it where i purchased it from i'll have to look at the receipt but i think it was only good for 30 days. Crossing finger that the manufacturer has a good warranty..

Oh and the last time is shut down on me, I wasnt in the game at all, just on the web which was a first. This stuff is a pain in the butt lol

Can I ask where you live? If you're in the UK, then that 30-day thing is irrelevant (unless it's not new). I can't say for the US sadly.

But any, I repeat do get back if you need any more help.

I'm fairly sure by now after 3 months, this issue has been sorted.

Please don't necro threads unnecessarily.
