[SOLVED?] Steam Cloud not working - logfile shows "HTTP 403 Forbidden" Error
The past 3 days, I've been trying to get Steam Cloud to download my save files from the laptop I'm currently typyng this into my desktop. When I launch a game on the desktop, it briefly displays the text 'Syncing: 0 kb/s" then it shows the following error message:

I tried all the usual methods for 'unclogging' the Steam pipes. Verifying cache, which found errors yet downloaded nothing; I deleted ClientRegistry.blob, it also did nothing. I finally went and deleted everything on Steam folder, except for 'steamapps' and steam.exe. And problem was still there.

Then, I decided to go through Steam's Cloud log from the 'logs' subfolder, and I found what it seems to be the cause of all this. Steam's not connecting to a specific server from amazonaws.com where my stuff is uploaded. Instead, the server is giving a 'HTTP 403 Forbidden' error message.

Searching around DIscussion pages made me realize other people are suffering the same issue, in more than one game, on different countries and with different ISPs.

This seems like a serious issue to me, yet most people are chalking it up to a specific game's Cloud support 'acting up'. But when you add up all the instances, it seems like the problem runs deep.


I'd like to know what can be done, how can I or Valve fix this. Sent a ticket, but haven't received anything back yet. And Twitter support has pretty much ignored me.

If you've had Cloud issues like me, please go check your Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt file, and look for 403 errors and post them here. Thanks.

Same on me. Alan Wake, Dead Island, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter are refusing to sync. Tried on several computers, one of which had a fresh install of Steam. Nothing helps. Waiting for fix.

Because most people think it's a specific issue with the one game they're playing, instead of a wider problem.

Have any of you tried going to the Steam->Settings->Download tab and switching your Download Region to see if that fixes the issue.

Yes I have, and it won't solve anything. Besides, my two computers had different download regions to begin with, since one of them had a fresh Steam install (it was set to the default server).

Yap, even changed it to another continent; it's still connecting to the same server and receives a 404 :(

New Steam Beta update (September 21st) supposedly adresses this issue, but I still cannot download from the Cloud.

This time, amazonaws is giving me a Timeout error instead of a 403.

Oh, nice! I thought it was a Windows 8 problem. It looks like the Cloud just sucks. "Timeout" errors here too!

they should just get their sh*t together, as we didn't steal the games, we paid for them. too often they make us think it's our fault while it really isn't...
