Steam uses my real name in game, not my profile name

In game Steam uses my first name as the player name. Nowhere save my email used for steam, does my real name appear, yet for some reason when I am playing Arma III it has my first name as my username, and will not let me change it.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Is your PC name your real name? Like when you set up windows you named your PC 'Bob Hoskins'? Arma makes the default profile your PC name, and you can't edit that default profile name, so if you want to use a different name for online, you need to create a new profile and use that. It sounds like a hassle but it only takes a few seconds.

Just to avoid any confusion, the new profile is the in-game profile, not a new Windows profile.

Yes, ARMA3 uses your PC username for the default file name. If you don't like it, you can create another profile under the ingame tab called "Configure-->Profile".

No, it shouldn't. Your game has a unique GUID that is generally used to reference server saves. This is independent of your profile.

OP does not seem to be able to make the difference between STEAM & GAME. Your game name in Arma 3 is totally independant of Steam.
