People try to use it as a way to decide if a trade is equal or not. Item A is values at X keys. Item V is valued at Y keys. You need to include 1 extra key with item A to equal the values.
In truth, items are only as valuable as waht someone is willing to give. If you want item A and you have item B to trade and you don't care about the extra key, then do the trade.
I would suggest trading directly for what you want and decide your own value for any given item.

TF2 keys are a very convenient currency for game trading because they can be converted into Steam wallet money by selling them at the community market or kept as trading material (almost all regular traders accept tf2 and dota 2 keys as "payment method"). Their market value is very stable. Trading with TF2 keys is safe because you don't have to trade outside the Steam trading feature (with paypal transactions or the like) and make yourself vulnerable to scams.
