Some games, however, have 3rd party DRM with activation limits. Those games can only be installed and activated so many times before you can't do so any more.
There is a backup feature in Steam that you can use to create backup files for the games. You can get them to CD, DVD or Custom sizes.
The only caveat is the one mentioned by Spawn of Totoro that some games have third-party DRM that limit installs. Steam itself has no limits.
Yeah, and while I do understand that Steam has to accept some compromises to get other big publishers to put anything on Steam at all, I do hope they are working towards convincing them that Steam itself is enough protection.
Games that I'm interested in seem to loose score when the 3rd party DRM banner shows up, though. So maybe I don't care all that much; it's just publishers not wanting to sell their game to me.
