Steam Settings keep resetting to default
Specifically, the Friends tab[puu.sh] and In-game tab[puu.sh] (shortcut keys for the overlay or screenshots). As well as the individual notification options and some options on the Interface tab.

Basically, no matter what i do they wont change or stay changed after i click accept. If i change the settings for any of those, accept, then try to open the settings again right after i changed them they will be back to default settings even if i restart steam, no matter how many times i change them.
I downloaded the Steam installer and ran it on repair mode, didnt help. I dont wanna do an absolute reinstall of Steam yet.

No, im not on the Steam Beta or any other beta. I have also tried using the default skin, didnt help, but its worth noting i can change the skin without that going back to default everytime.

Any ideas? this is quite annoying.

Oh i forgot to post. I managed to fix it.
Basically, deleted the Userdata folder on the Steam folder. I think one of the files in there was corrupted and couldnt be edited, steam remade it when i executed it. All the configs were back to the default but they could be edited, and some old non-steam game shortcuts on my library that i had deleted long ago reappeared.
I guess it copied the list from an old config saved on the cloud. Gonna leave this here so that anyone with the same problem can try it, make a copy of the Userdata folder before deleting it just in case it doesnt work.

What if it works and saves properly, but at random, it resets for no reason without explanation?

@xilekai I am having exactly that issue. I believe it correlates with Steam updates, though I am not certain.

It's never consistent. one update it stays, the next it completely wipes it. and logging in again doesn't affect it because again it's a 50 50. I could go to sleep, wake up, and have the settings I just changed the night before be gone without an update.

Are you on a PC that is cleaning your cookies?

Valve just needs to fix Steam. I'm sick of their ♥♥♥♥; resetting settings and locking content files which doesn't allow updates and sometimes modding. I'm honestly this close to switching to something more practical.

Yeah, it has happened to me multiple times. Every time my PC crashes (overheated), all/ most programs running in the background lost their settings. The most annoying one is Steam, of course, as I'll have to check its settings every time after a crash. I don't know why this happens, but it seems that it's not related to corrupted files... Other programs also have the same problem (DesktopOK and PicPick to be exact) and it's really annoying. Does anyone have an explanation? Thanks.

I am going to suggest you fix that problem of overheating, as that is much more important than Steam settings reverting to default. Then, after that is resolved, if there are still issues, you can continue to trouleshoot the problem, if needed.

This thread was last posted in almost a year ago, so some things may have changed since then anyway, with the Steam client.

Thanks for the reply. Forgot to mention that I've fixed the overheat problem. But this issue still happens from time to time, don't know why.

Sorry , I am a bit confused. You seem to lead on that the issue is still present because of the crashes.......

I don't mean to push this, as you now replied that the overheating is fixed. So what is going on about these "crashes", if that is still relevant, that is ?

Do you have any PC issues at all that have not been mentioned yet, that might be details that are relevant ?

Sorry for the vagueness.

Although the crash/ overheating problem is now Fixed, it still resets my settings for no reason, randomly, usually after I startup my PC. My PC now don't have any issue, and it has not reset my settings for a while. But I'm not sure if this would happen again as... it completely random.

I will post on this discussion if I encounter this problem in the future, thanks.
