Steam MB Usage
I'm trying to find out how much mb does Steam use up when you're playing a game , your not on multiplayer, and your not downloading anything. I've had recent internet issues and its very important I find this out.

Mine is using 142MB now, its been open for about 2-3 days now i guess. Shouldent be much more with the overlay active in game.

Thanks, has that been in total or something per hour/day?

If you mean bandwidth, Steam uses very little. No different than an instant messenger if you're not downloading or playing anything.

I have an internet limit so I need to to how much mb it is using up over time. For example, how much mb does it use up per hour while playing a game in single player (ie Sonic all Stars Racing Transformed)

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I couldn't use most of these due to them needing info from the ISP and that's non accessable for me

There is a difference from using bandwidth and a game using it. Steam's usage doesn't go up when you are playing.

If you are using a router, there may be a bandwidth meter in it. You can set a "soft cap" where it will prevent you from accessing the internet at that time.

I have a 250GB limit, so I set mine to 200GB. If I reach it, I stop downloading and just play games or limit myself to using the internet untill the month is over.

Thanks,I am trying to find out how much steam is using up. Good to hear that it's the same as not playing any games though.

Someone in this thread estimated 3MB an hour when idle.

From what I can see, no one can answer your question as it depends on your usage. You will just have to figure it out on your own.

I'm here because I have had an issue with steam using up around 5 gig's of data from my 12 g plan and I haven't downloaded or updated anything so...only happened a couple times though...not sure what to think or why it does this. My data usage meter says from chat and I was chatting through steam to a friend. Could this be?

Do you use Windows 10? There's a data usage setting there that shows you what applications are using the most data.

If you're playing single player games, just put Steam in offline mode and you can enjoy all your single player games with no bandwith usage.

I have the same type of internet situation as u finger. Started at 10GB cap and now I'm at 30GB. Make sure you have steam and everything else on your pc set to "do not automatically update". You can also set the steam throttling to 16kb and that will stop anything that starts from downloading to fast for you to turn it off.
