That was one group, not one friend, they have no friends. There is no way to hide your friend list so stop worrying about it cause it's not possible. To carry on any longer with this would be stupidity not the people who already told you it's not possible.

It seems he simply blocked all of his Steam friends.

If you block one of your friends, he won't show up in your friend list anymore but you will still show up in his. Keep in mind that unblocking a friend will reset the "friend since" date.
