Your right, but why don't they allow us to buy giftcards directly? Why do I have to spend money/time going to the store? Why are they only sold at these two venders? (Two of the worst companies in my opinion)
Not quite. VAT is, depending on your region. Most other places aren't taxed at all. Residents of Washington State, however, has to pay sales tax on Steam.
Valid point for kids. Absolutely hate both companies. If you buy anything from Gamestop or Best Buy, you will get scammed. (in other words getting less any of the items are actually worth)
Yes, depends on State laws.
In CA you are supposed to claim untaxed item bought on line when you file your taxes...I know of no one who does though and they don't seem to track it.
Actually, if the business of operation has a physically located in your state, you have to pay tax. Didn't have to pay tax in Texas until July on Amazon...when Amazon got sued 260mil in uncollected taxes, but then waved the fees by promising more investment/jobs in Texas.
^ What does this actually mean? They got out of having to pay 260mil, by making people charge tax, and promising to make more money in Texas....only the customer gets screwed. Yay.
Forgot to mention, they had 1 distribution plant in texas beforehand. Now they have multiple. The "physical" place of operation. Even if it is just a distribution center, and not a store.
That is true of any retailer. A company has to make money.
Going to Gamestop or Best Buy, you can get the item right then and there, so you pay extra for the convenience.
If I buy a 60" TV, it would be from a store, not on line. Or anything I want to be able to return if it doesn't work out. Most on-line retailers don't pay for return shipping and charge a restocking fee of 10-20% of the items cost.
"Are taxes collected for Steam purchases?
If you made an online order for a Valve product and you are an international customer there may be taxes or VAT charges included in your purchase.
To the extent VAT applies to a transaction, Valve absorbs that cost and pays VAT itself."

Like I said, depends on state laws.

"Many smart shoppers can find bargains online, but don't realize they can incur a tax bill in the process. California law requires tax on in-state purchases, and also requires tax on items purchased out-of-state for use in California."
And yes, WA residence have to pay taxes on Steam because that is where they are located. My sister makes me buy her games because she lives there.
Amazon.com does...not to mention everything on amazon is typically tax free, and s/h free. If a stuent, prime membership is like 50% off and free 2 day s/h...
Forgot to say, every item from best buy and Gamestop....cheaper on Amazon. Used or New
You just have to know what to say when filing a return, and talk to customer support if needed. I've returned a Chromebook for free, full refund like a month after I bought it. Stores seem to have less predictability than Amazon in my opinion. Did the same with a lot of other open boxed products, and with year old broken products...full refund, and free s/h labels...
....recently I've obtained 100 free posters, 3 Razer Onza's, a new turtle beach, free 8000 dpi gaming mouse, and tons of other random stuff + money from Amazon.....crazy...(all free)
I don't trust UPS or FED-EX to bring it to me. And not all of the Amazon partners do pay for return shipping or wave restocking fees.
Prime is only worth it of you buy a lot. My wife and I used to, but the prices on amazon have gone up to that we find in target and walmart for the same items, some times it is even more then them.
Also, I would have to go by their schedule to be there when it was deliverd when I could choose when to buy it at a brick and mortar retailer.
It all depends.
As for on-line retailers, I search several and don't rely on a single one. You can find better deals that way.
Awesome deed for your sister. I typically don't have to pay Tax on any online purchases...besides products directly from Amazon LLC, but I live close to OK which doesn't abide by the tax law and I have family there, so if something is valuable on only obtainable through Amazon LLC (like a $1000) purchase, I'd have it sent up there, and drive 20mins visit family nd come back, rather than pay the $85 tax charge. (but theree are plenty of other merchants Amazon sponsors to avoid the tax.
Been ordering everything online for the last 6-7 years...no tax + free 2 day s/h, + not having to get up. True life of a gamer. Should be obese, but i'm like annorexic atm. ^_^
