Force Steam to update a game?
From what I gather on Bethesda's developer blog, they released a patch for Dishonored 2 days ago. However, multiple launches of Steam since then has yet to get my Steam to recognize that there is a patch for Dishonored and as a result, it refuses to update my copy of the game. Is there any way to force an update?

In the steam client, right click on the game in your library list, select properties from the dropdown list, then in the Local files tab select Verify integrity of game cache.

If everything verifies correctly then you should have the latest patched release on the Steam servers.

Thanks for the reply. This is what I had tried and I guess this is what puzzles me. On the game's Steam news page, it lists that there is and should be an update, verifying the game cache verified properly.

However, upon viewing the local files, none of the files have a modification date since I last played the game and the game's executable is still listed as the original version 1.0.0.0 so it seems like Steam's refusing to update me. Sadface.

Don't look at the executable. The verson can usualy be seen in-games.

Well, usualy. I just checked my self and can't find it in the game.

Since you said looking at the executable was a bad way to do it (i'm not sure I agree, since Civ 5's Steam executable works for this) I tried to find another way to verify whether or not Steam updated my version of Dishonored.

So... I found an updated cheat utility. A trainer (modifies memory address entries on the fly) that was updated to work only for the newer 1.2 version. I can verify that the utilities from the site are usually functional and trustworthy as i've beta tested for them so I attempted to utilize this one with my version of Dishonored. The result is that the game instantly crashes utilizing the version intended for the 1.2 version but functions properly using the base 1.0 version.

So for some reason, Steam is still refusing the update my game and i'm not sure why.

The executable information is not a mandatory change, and is stored in a manifest inside of the executable on compile. Its rather easy to skip, or not even use that. I personally use it on all of my projects to make tracking versions for the client much easier. But like I said its not mandatory and alot of developers dont do it.

Also, admitting to cheats even for a legit reason is not allowed topic conversation. As for your game, You should try changing content servers. Steam -> Settings -> Downloads + Cloud -> Download Region -> Next closest server.

If that fails you should (IF) the game uses NCF files in steamapps folder, delete it, restart steam, and reinstall the game (Note NCF files are manifests and steam will redetect the game) & update based on that. however if its GCF which actually contains the game (which I believe is outdated now) dont do it or you will redownload the entire game.

It seems to neither have an NCF or GCF. Oddly enough, most of the games I have from Steam don't seem to either? I have a bunch of ACF files though deleting the ACF corresponding to Dishonored and going through the whole discovering files process didn't remedy the situation. The game in question in this case is Dishonored and rather than having purchased it completely through Steam, I have the disc version but it's registered through Steam and runs/updates through Steam and there doesn't appear to be any other way to update it (no standalone patch - it's Bethesda).

So I seem to have no idea on how to actually get the patch for the game at this point which is really odd.

Thank you for the answer on updating games. What happened to me is that I tried to mod a game and I lost a file and the game would not start, so I tried this and it worked perfectly. :D

Thank you to: Kiya
