From their prespective, the code was used and is attatched to the account. The account holder will say he tossed or lost the disk and such. Since there is no way to truly prove thing one way or another, things will most likey stay as they are.
You already contacted support, that is the most you can do. They can tell you what your chances are and if it is possible.
No one here can realy say 100% what will happen wither way, myself included.
Since you have an actuall proof of ownership you might be entitled to that copy, even if -I'm making an example, don't get me wrong- you stole that physical copy from someone else.
Keep us updated, I'm curious to know what Support has to say.
If all he has is the cd-key and does not know the account information, why would they? Especialy if it has been attatched to that account for a few years. It has been i his closet since 2001, afterall.
Support would be suspicious. I only see two outcomes. Either they say no or they lock out the key compleatly and no one gets it.
There have also been times where duplicate keys were released. That is another possibility. We are talking about a game released before Steam.
Hm, you have a point considering all he can provide is a box ♥♥♥. And a box ♥♥♥ alone might not be enough, considering one could pass it to other people.
Now I'm even more curious...
