open links WITH steam
Let's say I click a profile link in Firefox or Chrome, it opens a new tab in that browser.

Is there anyway to instead open that link with the Steam client?

Also, I did figure out that you can use the Steam browser protocol commands to do it but they only work if you use the long Steam ID number and not with the Steam ID name. Anyway to make it work with the name?

copy and paste into address bar on Firefox or Chrome or whatever browser you use
example: steam://url/SteamIDPage/76561197999984396 - works
steam://url/SteamIDPage/mattreptar - doesn't work

Why is this not a default feature though, is the question? Discord opens Invite links in the Discord app by default, why can't Steam do the same thing for store links and steamcommunity links when you click on them? It could be a toggleable option if you don't like that behaviour.

I think Valve doesn't want that. To avoid the possible malicious links being opened through Steam clients browser.

The funny thing is, that it works on my friends pc without him doing anything. Steam links from his discord opens in Steam client....
Thats normal.

If you are using a browser, why would you expect there to be an open within steam client option? And why do people like or want that bs. Just use steam via web browser. I always did because the steam client is way too slow as a browser anyways.

I thought about that, but I can't see that really being a problem. If it's the legitimate Steam website, the client will be able to figure that out. The legitimate Steam website (and servers, etc) will have a range of IP addresses associated with them. Just don't open any links not from those addresses. Maybe it's more complex than that, but I can see that being the solution, anyway.

It does it for mobile now.

It's useful to me, primarily because I don't want to sign in through my browser. That's basically all there is to it. It's convenient to open some Steam link in the browser from elsewhere, then open it in the Client from there.

They're already doing that with the steam chat. It's not an issue anymore.

Well, it doesn't work on my PC and never has. Only links in steams own chat opens in steam. anything else opens in my web browser.... which is damn annoying cause I'd rather use Steam for Steam things. If I use my browser it gets thrown in between all the other tabs I have open. And I don't feel it's slow at all. Only at Steam Sales :)

I agree, the Open in Steam function is extremely useful. If I am browsing around and find Discussions I wan to participate in, just open it in Steam since it's already signed in. Signing in on the Browser is very annoying, and the sign in gets cleared frequently. That's just one example, I'm already using the extension a lot.

What I do is make a group chat and not invite anyone.
When I find a link I want to look at on steam I paste it into the chat group I made and then just click it and there you go.

The browser extension that Veteran29 made works beautifully, I use it all the time.

How cumbersome... but if it works for you.

Btw: The whole idea of this thread is how to avoid exactly that.

I was using stream://openurl/ +url for Black Ops 3 workshop pages on my website. It used to work, but now all my links to the map pages in the Black Ops 3 workshop stopped working (opens the Steam client, but doesn't take me to workshop page). Does anyone know another way to get this to work?
