Download Speed
Okay, I have been using Steam for about two months. I like the variety of games, but the download speeds are killing me! I'm barely getting 1.4 MB/S. Is there anyway to improve this? My settings are set at unlimited under Download! I want to use Steam more, but I don't want to wait forever to download a game!

Who is your provider and which package are you on?

And what is the speed they are predicting you will get?

1.4MB/s is around average.

What speed does your ISP say you are supposed to be getting?

Are you sure you're not confusing MB with Mb?

1.4MB/s is actually rather good. It's fiberoptics for sure so I don't know why you're complaining. It didn't take that long for me to download games with that speed. Pretty much all of my friends get 400MB/s which is over 3 times slower. At 1.4MB/s you could download an average game file, say 8GB, in just over one hour and a half... With fiberoprics, a 30mb internet package will give you around 3.9MB/s and that's probably the 3rd/2nd best speed you can get in England, if you live there.

How did this comment end up in Help and Tips? I placed it in Suggestions for a reason. Why does Steam have an area for suggestions if they don't want people to make suggestions?

Steam download speeds are already fine. If yours are lower, then something isn't right.

Post your speedtest results.

I find that the download speeds are quite slow but I just assumed it was because I'm in the UK and Internet speeds are worse here than most places

Speeds in the United Kingdom are pretty good actually. Depends on your location + ISP.

I know for a fact that they just recently made some changes that have reduced the speed at which we were getting games downloaded to roughly 1/10 of that now. I happened to do a series of speed tests on my PC and last week and every day since then, my FIOS speeds have not changed based on these tests. however, when I just went to download a few games (one at a time) have have problems managing to keep 1.5mb/s Before, a few days ago, I download some apps at the usual 9.9 to 10mb/s rate. This is very dissapointing to see as it was one of the biggest assets that Steam had (fast speed) and they seem to have taken that away. With the introduction of the plethora of unplayable early access games which are intermixed with the official releases, things are starting to look like steam is starting to make a move to conserve resourses and introduce ways to totally throw your money away like the other ones, like EA And Ubisoft.

Look like my 15 year relationship with steam is now in question and they are gearing up to make themselves just like the servises that we all have been demonizing for all the right reasons. Steam needs to stop this or they will be losing a long time customer, even if that means I goto another service like gamestop or worse as the disadvantages are getting more and more marginal.

I have to disagree. My download speeds have remained the same over the last 6 months. 3-3.5MB/s download speeds.

I say 6 months because my ISP increased my speed some time before then. I was getting 2-2.5MB/s

A lot could happen between your computer an Steam to lower your speeds. It isn't a direct connection after all, it goes through many hubs and routers along the way and ISPs have been know to throttle some services for their own reasons.

Steam's speeds are fine. It sounds like you don't know much about how your ISP advertises speeds vs how Steam shows your speeds.

Your ISP's speeds are stated in Mb/s. Steam's are shown in MB/s. There is a difference between the two.

Mb/s (megabit a second) are a smaller measurement, so they look larger.
MB/s (megabyte a second) are a larger measurement, so they look smaller.

1 MB = 8 Mb so a 25 Mb connection will get you a 3 MB download speed.

Wat?

My Download speed has actually doubled, from 256kbps (shut up) to 512 kbps on average.
