Dangers of accepting gifts from unknown accounts on Steam?
What are the dangers of accepting gifts from unknown accounts on Steam?

For example a random person sends another a steam game as a gift, but then the gifter could revoke it or the gift purchased was made using a fraudulent payment method, etc. Maybe it's a key that was leeched off a leaked database, etc? The affected account is the receiver rather than the giver or both?

Should places like SteamGifts, etc, actually be allowed for Steam game sharing? It's encouraging people to accept possibly stolen goods which breaks steam rules?

I guess on the plus side, people might be more likely to buy cheap games which they would never play to gift to others. However, doesn't that just encourage more bad game development?

I understand that sure it's nice to give a game to someone else out of kindness. However, a completely random stranger? Also, what's the point? You go there to share games, hoping to get back another in return. But at high risk? Really it's only the owner and mods which have all the control and can make up their own rules which they don't even have to follow themselves. Acting like a pyramid scheme? The little generous guys get no say and just gift to the fatter more greedy cats, who always win more.

Anyways, are there any dangers in accepting gifts from a random stranger which could affect your own account just due to taking that gift, should we avoid it if possible?

I ask this due to the steam rule:
"Redeeming Fraudulent Gifts - Never accept a gift from an unknown user. Any accounts tied to a redeemed gift from a fraudulent source may be suspended."

Yet third party places seem to be encouraging it and are legally allowed to?

AFAIK gifts are safe.

From random strangers? I thought it wouldn't matter too at first. However when the steam rules suggest otherwise, just leading to confusion? Is it just not inforced rather a 'told-you-so' cause?

The article is correct. It tells you the worst that could happen though, and not what may actually happen. Most likely the game will just be removed and the other person's account could get suspended. If it happens repeatedly, then your account may get suspended as it will look like you may be a knowing part of it.

3rd party sites are just that, 3rd party. They are not owned, operated or maintained my Valve. They can encourage things all they want, but in the end, it is Valve/Steam's policy that matters.
