Internet works fine, but can't connect to any game servers
Hello, so as you can probably see I have a problem.
My internet is fine, i can search on google, youtube and stuff, but when I TRY TO PLAY ANY ONLINE GAMES LIKE (league of legends, cs 1.6) I just can't connect to any server even if the server is working (not off). When i connect i just time out and can't connect.
So what could be my problem?
Things i tried:
-Port forwarding. Photo: http://www.part.lt/perziura/88836e32131ac69d9fca389f9cca1c27300.png
-Restarting router, computer and everything
-Reinstalling everything
-Searching 1000000000 forums and find no solution
-Turning off firewalls/antivirus softwares

I started doing ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew and quickly join a server, that works SOMETIMES.

So what could be the problem? I don't get it.

I am currently in a campus in Amsterdam and the wi fi here is used by everyone in here and probably this is the reason why the connection to the game servers won't connect.
Public universary wi-fi, 100% chance that they blocked gaming ports unless you were able to play before. For me it magically been fixed and i don't know how. Maybe same problems with ports after a power cycle i may had to wait for it to update and boom now i can play again.

oh you got lucky this time. I wanted to enter the ip adress and go further to unlock the port for servers but I think they gonna find out so I will wait as u did hopefully sooner or later it will work.

i very much doubt they would leave the default login on their networking equipment, chances are if they did nothing would be working at all

Hi guys, I was able to connect to online servers from any game but then I used to loss the connection afer a few minutes. If someone is having this issue while reading this, here is the solution. I struggled many days trying different things but nothing seemed to work.

go to seachbox on windows and type "run", once there type:

"netsh int ip reset" and press enter
"netsh winsock reset" and press enter

then execute the command prompt as administrator and type:

"ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter

"ipconfig /registerdns" and hit enter

"ipconfig /release" and hit enter

"ipconfig /renew" and hit enter

Then restart the PC and it should work. I hope it avoids some pain to someone out there!
thats addware, windows do not change value in netsh winsoc reset
even microsoft have look into this reset and confirm it, but other then that it been seen as user problem with crapware dataminer or whatever that can do that.
Ty for the help. i manged to fix it by setting my network firewall to low. They must have changed the definitions

Im having a very similar problem its been going on for at least 3 months now. i was playing games fine browsing the internet with no problem then one day i try load up a game and it just wont load and it crashes my connection to my pc for 10 seconds and then i reconnect when i close the game. at first i thought it was my router i was with talktalk so i got a new router a few weeks later and the problem persisted so i changed isp to BT and the wifi is faster and better yet the problem is still here. ive tried nearly everything on this thread and nothing has seemed to work except when i typed "netsh int ip reset" into the command prompt. i restarted my pc loaded up a game and it worked i thought i had fixed the issue however 5 mins later it stopped working and the wifi connection on my pc wont work unless i close down the game. Ive tried opening up ports 80 and 443 but it dosnt seem to work ive tried doing stuff with my pc's firewall but all games are run as administrator so ive even went into my routers firewall but nothing seems to work. But the weirdest thing is that if i turn my phones data hotspot on and connect my pc to it everything works as it should i can play games browse the internet watch youtube. any help would me much appreciated as all i want to do is play games again.

I had this problem but i fixed it by doing the following:
- Access Control Panel --> Network and Internet --> Network and Sharing Center --> Click on your "wifi name" at Connections: (your wifi name) --> Click "properties" --> Under the "Networking" tab click "Configure..." --> Click the "Power Managment" tab --> unhook the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" --> Click "Ok" --> Done.

exactly very same issue. can not play some multiplayer games for basically no reason. it started happening maybe month ago, not even, and I still have no idea what's going on. What I have tried:
1.Disabling router firewall, Windows Firewall through Avast, Microsoft Defender firewall.
2.Resetting router to factory settings through settings page.
3.Using mobile hotspot as an connection.

What I can not afford and/or do not want to try:
1.Changing ISP.
2.Getting cable ethernet connection.
3.Reinstalling Windows 10.

@ notinmood

I did not see where you said you had tried completely bypassing the router (no wireless connection).

EDIT......Yes I see you said no to that.

It does not matter if the internet works fine but you just cannot connect to game servers. Until the router (wireless connection) in general is bypassed and the issue tested with ethernet directly to the source unit, then it must remain a question mark in the troubleshooting process.

Process of elimination is the idea.

we will be wanting to get broadband internet through cable to my computer with WiFi shared to rest of the devices. at least that's what they were saying at the point we were in that that's how it would work and is described online. is it the same as ethernet cable? we do not sadly have one of those if it is not. we can not afford to spend much, therefore I am stuck in hard situation.

It would be best if you could troubleshoot the problem without using a wireless connection at all, just for now.

Do you have a friend or relative that has a trusted network you could test this issue on, just to eliminate your connection or hardware ? When issues like this come up, and you are not sure where the problem is, change the variables of the equation, and that might help you solve the problem.

The variables being, what you can eliminate or change in the current situation. Different PC, different network (trusted of course), etc. If possible, make one change at a time and then see if the issue is still there. Once you have eliminated all the easy steps, then you can move on to more involved steps, and maybe we can help. It's best to do the easier ones first.

I have sadly no means of getting connection other than wireless, especially not ethernet. don't have family or friends who can share ethernet connection or computer, we don't live by much funds.

@♫MusicMen225♫

I see you said this previously :
Escrito originalmente por ♫MusicMen225♫:
1.Disabling router firewall, Windows Firewall through Avast, Microsoft Defender firewall.

Try this just as a test :

Boot your PC into safe mode with networking. Make sure you have "with networking" enabled in the boot options menu. Then when in that boot, run Steam and only run Steam and see if you can connect to game servers.

Don't try to actually play a game, as your (primary) video drivers are not loaded in this boot. Just see if you can connect and see if this gets by your problem.

If it does, then Avast might be the cause (a recent update to the antivirus, maybe ?)

If that still does not work :

Do you have any ethernet port on the back of that router ? I am guessing you said "no" to the bypass possibility because you don't, but maybe you do and have not considered that.

If you can, bring the PC to the router and plug it in using ethernet. Keep troubleshooting the problem while still booted into safe mode WITH networking enabled.

In this boot, any software that might run automatically on boot that you maybe are not aware does, will not get in the way of connecting to game servers, if that is the cause. That's one reason why it is a good means to troubleshoot issues like this.

Process of elimination.

EDIT...

Also, make sure your wireless drivers are up to date. Go the manufacturer's website for your computer or hardware and make sure the wi fi drivers are updated. Don't let Windows Update do it for you. Do this step yourself, manually.

There is also the possibility that over time, the wireless signal can become interfered with, by walls, doors, furniture, location change from where the PC is to the router, etc.

Sometimes, simply moving closer or removing any obstacles can fix issues like this, if that applies. For example, if you are on the third floor and the router is on the first.

Forget it. We got the new router and with it came ethernet cable and it's now in. I can enable or disable it with control panel so it's good enough. I can attempt using only the cable now though.

Edit: So the new WiFi connection fixed everything. I don't know why it did, but it did. Once I got connected to new WiFi, games started working again. I am so sorry for the issue. And now that we also have Ethernet cable at hand and it's easy to manage it's finally something good.

Thanks for the reply you have found the problem and what it was. You performed process of elimination by doing what you did, and found the issue.

So well done, and hopefully it stays corrected. Feel free come back if you need further help on this topic. Good luck to you always, and don't be sorry about anything. That's what these forums are here for, to get help with issues like this.

Hi. To solve this issue is so easy. Just go to your modem/router find that very very tiny hole , if not on the back of the router then maybe side of it.. they press it like 15 second then release. it means you reset that thing. then wait for 5 min. And all of problem would be fixed. Thankyou.
