how to use authenticator with cloud gaming?
I had to remove the Steam Guard authenticator, because it doesn't seem to be able to handle the idea that I might log in from a computer that's remote from my physical location. I am using Boosteroid to play steam games, but when I do, the authenticator offers me a bunch of nonsensical options and then blocks my account, so i had to remove it.

This doesn't seem like a good solution, so I am presuming there's some kind of workaround that I don't know?

You will have to ask the Boosteroid service.

Sounds like this is a Boosteriod issue and not a steam issue. You should contact their support and ask them for help since clearly this is not a steam issue.

1) removing your authenticator is a terrible idea

2) mfa works fine on legitimate services like Nvidia Geforce Now, microsoft xcloud, Google's old Stadia, etc

3) If a service cannot handle a gaming platforms MFA, I would literally never use that service, ever

4) I would trust them less if their FAQ page is a 404

The problem is a steam issue, but thanks for the utterly useless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ answers. Glad to see you people have zero ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue.

When I try to use it, Guard asks me where I am logging in from, which is obviously not where I physically located and then asks me which of five things I am doing, none of which makes any sense and then locks me out

This is a stream problem that their Authenticator makes no logical sense and doesn’t understand why you might be logging in from somewhere other than where you are located. Seems pretty basic

I guess the realm answer is stop buying games from Steam

Boosteroid doesn't have servers in your country. By using Boosteroid you are violating Section 3 A Steam Subscriber Agreement which forbids you from disguising your true country of residence "for any purpose".

https://store.steampowered.com/subscriber_agreement/english/

You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to order or purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, Valve may terminate your access to your Account.

Aside from that, Valve noticed your country doesn't match the location from which you signed in and therefore refuses the login to protect your account. Such unusual attempts cannot be distinguised from legitimate and hijack.

No, the real answer is to stop using illegitimate untrusted services.

However, even GFN is affected and they recommend putting the phone in airplane mode while signing in manually:

*Tries to use Steam on a service that is labeled as beta*
*Blames Steam when issues occur *

Makes total sense...

Yeah, because STEAM choking on the notion that I might log in on a server not physcially located near me when I tell STEAM that "yes, that's me" is a Boosteroid problem. Steam, not boosteroid, is the one that sometimes blocks my access.

Funny how Epic doesn't have any problems with this concept.

So, yes, it's a STEAM issue.

You guys really are thick as bricks

And again

Steam works fine on many other streaming platforms

Steam's MFA works fine on those platforms

Meaning the problem is not Steam, its Boosteroid

Steam is not responsible because Boosteroid sucks

Hey, thanks for the reply and the very interesting information. I'm not "disguising" my true country of residence. I'm simply using a service located elsewhere, butt this sounds like a conversation to have with Valve to see what their take on this is.

I understand why they block access, or rather I would, if my account didn't have an authenticator linked to my phone that can ask whether it is a hijack or legit log in. I kind of thought that was the point of MFA.

And Boosteroid isn't any more an "untrusted illegitimate service" than NVIDIA is. In fact, I rather trust them MORE seeing as they're an European company, rather than some unregulated wild west American company like NVIDIA. THey're freaking partnered with Microsoft and ASUS, so it's not like they're some weird marginal side show. Glad to see NVIDIA fans are parochial as hell though. Maybe get out and see the world people.

In any event, thanks for the interestng information. I'll try to get in touch with Steam folks directly and see if they can shed any light on it.

And Boosteroid in fact has quite a few servers in the U.S., so I suspect what is happeneing is when it occassionally connects me to a European server, so I think Ettain got close to a partial answer here.

I've asked Steam, and we will see what they say.

Did you find anything out? Same problem here in Australia.
