Controller help - 8bitdo 2c Ultimate & Steam Deck
Hi all,

I am a noob to all things steam deck and controllers so please be nice.

I have updated my steam deck and aware it now supports the 8bitdo ultimate 2C.

I have connected it and it shows up. How ever on the diagram it shows the following controller - https://www.8bitdo.com/ultimate-bluetooth-controller/

I have https://www.8bitdo.com/ultimate-2c-wireless-controller/ where the buttons are laid out differently.

Firstly has anyone managed for the steam deck to show the correct controller?

Secondly when I try and configure the buttons it shows as a default xbox controller. Can anyone help me work out where I going wrong.

Want to be able to set up the extra buttons to be do stuff the standard steam deck does such as quick menu extra with one button.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

For generic controllers Steam uses the same diagram. Perhaps in the future they update with specific artwork - I doubt it but we'll see.

L4/R4 come under Back Grips in the controller layout, or if you're looking at View Layout they are the commands below LT/RT commands.

Did you check the developers website to see if there is any firmware updated specifically for the controller itself?

Controller is fully updated. Annoying that the front buttons can’t be configured properly. As from the other suggestion, I can a least possibly use the extra trigger button.

Shame it doesn’t show the proper front buttons, as they are ideally the ones I wish to use.

Does the developer have software to use to configure buttons. For example Logitech has software called G sync that lets you configure your buttons and such for games. Did you make sure there is no configuration software on the developers site?

also just googled ai for this answer:

To configure buttons on an 8BitDo controller, you use the "8BitDo Ultimate Software" which allows you to customize button mapping, adjust stick and trigger sensitivity, control vibration, and create macros on your 8BitDo device across various platforms like PC, mobile, and Switch.

Use this 8bitdo ulitmate software program.

That seems to be for windows only. Can’t see the software for steam deck.

It technically should work on the steam deck. Do you know how to go to desktop mode in your steam deck? Well you download it thru that and use it on there. Many people have installed everything this method on steam deck, like the ubisoft connect software or even the EA app on it.

Starting a different launcher like Epic, Gog, Ubisoft etc. and playing their games is a different story than using a software like this IMO.

The launchers are installed through a compatibility layer called Proton, based on Wine. Proton creates a closed Windows-like folder structure within the steam compatibility folder and mimic you're running Windows - or 'translates' translates Windows to Linux. For each Launcher/program installed through proton you have a separate 'windows like environment' for this program only. If you install e.g. Gog through proton, then you run Gog via steam, and use their launcher to install games within the created comp folder.

So, if you then install the controller app - and if it works - it would be in a different environment which technically has nothing to do with the environment for GOG or steam games. Running them both simultaneously to use the controller program wouldn't work from my point of view.

Correct me if I'm wrong or if there are workaround to make it work.

I got this understanding when I was trying to use the Logitech app on my Linux Mint system to configure my g29 steering wheel (which runs oop or using open source tools for configuration in the meantime btw)

@derechteandrej

The 8BitDo software doesn't function as an intermediary like the Logitech app does.
The configurations are written to/stored on the physical 8BitDo device.

Not even the Logitech software did 😅
My entire post was about that it doesn't work.

Hmm, I'm not commenting whether or not the Logitech app worked.

By "the 8BitDo software doesn't function as an intermediary", I don't mean the 8BitDo software failed to work as an intermediary tool, but that it isn't an intermediary tool. Whereas in comparison the Logitech app is an intermediary tool.

With the 8BitDo software the configuration is written to the controller and then we quit the software. It doesn't act as the middleman between the controller and other software.

You get me?

Ok, thanks for the explanation.
