If the file system is unsupported for the game, it means that the game uses files that are bigger than 4GB.
Steam, so far I know supports exFAT and NTFS file systems, as well as ext4 (on linux). It may support others as well.
You need a storage device formatted with a file system that supports file sizes that are larger than 4GB.
I do not recommend using a USB device unless you change the settings on your computer to keep the USB device powered at all times. Windows will otherwise shut down the power connection when it thinks its not actively used enough). See power settings and 'device manager'.
You might be able to create a separate partition on the USB device using the free disk space. That partition can be formatted to another file system (exFAT or NTFS).
