Does anyone know how to stop steam opening when you open a game?
I find it an inconvenience when the steam window boots up steam when the game is opened. How do I fix this?

We can still use the previous UI and avoid this if we wanted to. Follow these instructions to use the old UI and disable automatic updates.

I'd just like to add another comment complaining about the same thing.

I want Steam to launch on windows startup, but stay in the background; I feel like the startup impact has doubled with this update. I don't want to mess around in RegEdit, and I don't want to add scripts from random people; I just want built-in functionality.

Steam just needs to add one more toggle switch under "Run Steam when my computer starts" that says "Launch Steam in background." Problem fixed.

Use the -silent switch.

U can just open steam, press on X and then open game, steam will be in backround but its annoying that u have to do this when u could just press game before
Congratulations on reading the entire thread and not getting the point. The point of the thread is NOT to have to close the window every time for no reason.

♥♥♥♥ Valve and their greed.

Worst part is for my Bethesda games, running the Script Extender through my Mod Manager like I've always done now brings up Steam, which in turn brings up the vanilla game launcher without the Script Extender. (Which, in turn, for Skyrim LE, mangles my load order when it re-applies my steam mods). Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 are now a total pain in the butt to work with.

I changed the "Steam" key in \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
From steam default: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" -silent
To: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" "-silent"
That is, I added "" around the -silent. That workes for me atleast.

I also had this issue after the UI update, then it's resolve by himself 2-3 days after ... Because of that, I assume it's really a bug and not some bad move from Steam.

(Windows 11)

I had this question too, fix may not work for all but i realized it only does it on the first startup after i power on my pc, so i enabled open on startup in settings, steam opens but doesnt display on monitors or task bar, and the games open without steam opening. i used to have open on startup enabled so you might need to change a setting or two though.

I can't believe how irritating this is!
They literally turned my computer into their advertisement billboard without my permission!
How laws even allowing this kind of privacy violations???
No, seriously?
Popping up on my desktop without my permission is like entering someone's house without owner's permission!

And it seems like they have no intention to fix this problem at all!

They did it on purpose. Pushing more advertisements was Valve's main purpose for the client update in the beginning of June this year.

I'm not experiencing this because I'm using the old UI and forcing Steam to minimize when it starts up. Here is how to do that:

Do :steamthis:THAT:steamthis: and be sure to disable the updates before they disable these options. If you wait until they kill the ability to use the old UI you're stuck with the new UI and all of their annoying ads.

welcome to the world of no right to ownership.

its utterly ridiculous that the only solutions to this is either downgrading your steam or some janky auto script written by a stranger (no offense, im sure you worked hard on it). i PAID for my game, when i bought it there were no disclaimers that you would give me a ad every time i try to use the program i PAID for. there isnt any way to turn it off within steam, which in my eyes is a violation of so many of the supposed "vales" that steam has tried to strive for in the industry. for a company that preaches about linux and the right to open source, easily modified, individually controlled code, this is downright evil. valve, get you ♥♥♥♥ in order, im no joke considering epic for most games these days cause they genuinely have a better store than you, and dont show me ads every time i try and boot up a game i OWN. fix this or you will lose business
OakIris 2023 年 7 月 26 日 下午 12:24
Ugh, still not fixed. It only takes a few seconds to close the two windows, but it is so annoying that Steam decided that this is some sort of an upgrade to their UI. So unnecessary and so unwelcome!
Segert 2023 年 7 月 26 日 下午 1:09
Steam always opens when you open a steam game. It always have been always will be.

Also i see people mentioning ads. Is that a new thing. I havent noticed it yet.
