How to fix Steam Voice Chat
This is a quick tutorial that will help fix your problems like:

- They can hear me, but I can't hear them.
- I can't hear anything or anyone and they can't hear me.
- I can hear them, but they can't hear me.
- etc.

First, make sure you sound receive an sound output is up in the game settings, and on steam chat. If this doesn't work look below.

Basically its a simple fix. The problem is, Steam doesn't know what your preferred headset/microphone set up is. So go down to your volume control in your task bar, right click it and select playback devices. Make sure, you disable/enable the microphone or speakers you are not using or want Steam to use. Make sure this is done for recording as well. Also, make the microphones/headphones that you are using default. That way Steam will always know which one to go to.

If you are still having issues, just post your problem below and I'll try to help you out!

I've been having problems with
-They can hear me but I can't hear them
I went through everything suggested, checked that my preferred device is the only thing enabled, checked that my receive volume was all the way up, that my friends weren't somehow muted, checked that in steam settings my wireless Logitech headset was selected. They used to work but just recently for no reason at all, without me fiddling with any settings, I can no longer hear my friends in voice chat. I've restarted everything my computer, my headset, steam. I'm not sure what's wrong.

Greetings all,
I have an issue that hasn't been raised here yet. I can hear them, they can hear me, but what I hear is badly broken and nearly unreadable.

Would that be a connection issue? The game seems to be fine otherwise, and my connection seems to be pretty stable.

i have a stupid problem which pissed me...

my in game sound is directed to my headphone, but my steam voice chat is stubbornly kkeep routed to my speaker, which i dont undestand why... wtf steam

Next time I highly recommend people to start a new topic, because this one is kinda.... old
Steam went through a lot of changes, let alone, windows 10 became popular/most used, etc.
The issue maybe the same in a way, but not truly the same.

Anyway with that out of the way.

Try clicking the Gear icon in Steam Friends and from there, try setting the audio output to your headphones.

Capt_Drunkbeard's issue sounds like a bug that Steam does.... randomly.
e.e;chromium. (can be fixed with a reboot usually) (that post was 2017omg)

Okay, so I have a bit of a weird situation with my sound using Steam. Also have a weird situation using Discord, but that's a different story. A friend of mine and I were playing Baldur's Gate 3 tonight and talking via our respective headsets. Steam has required me for quite a while to use Push to talk, but when I go into the settings to change that Push to talk doesn't appear to be on. So I was doing that during the game, and then all of a sudden Push to talk stopped working and I don't think sound was going through my mic at all. Any help you could give would be 100% appreciated. I'm so frustrated with this!

My friend, this is a 10 year old post!

First thing I would try, is disable all other input devices your computer is not using. For sanity I'd also do perform a quick reboot and try to manually select the correct device in the Steam Settings.
