High CPU & GPU usage with Steam Client even at idle ????
Hey guys,

Using the Resource Monitor window, I noticed this particular problem where my Steam Client is using more than 25% CPU usage and 90% GPU usage even at idle, i.e. no games running nor queued downloads/updates whatsoever. Even after disabling Steam when Window starts and Steam is not running at all, the Steam Client still kicks in after 10 mins or so. Choosing the option of "End Process" seems to shut it down completely but it's kinda annoying that I have to do it every time I turn on my machine.

Any idea on how to fix it? Steam should not be using that much resource at idle IMO. I tried to reinstall Steam but it didn't help.
Thanks all in advance.

Wait...you have Steam set to not run when you boot and you are saying it starts after 10 minutes or so anyway ? What ?

EDIT...Do you have ANY of these ?

Yes, when I open Steam, that would be Steam.exe
The Steam Client still kicks in even when I choose not to run Steam when Windows starts.

This is a little confusing to me...you did not answer my other question yet...maybe you are checking....

Can you use the msconfig feature to force Steam to not start on boot ?...I always do this so my pc will boot faster anyway....

Can you post your basic pc specs here please just for starters ?
Alright here's basically what I have for now, all at idle state, i.e. no games or software running whatsoever.

Steam is not running but Steam Client is still using 25% of my CPU usage.

Steam is running (Steam.exe)

I'm using i5 4690k & GTX 970 with 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz btw.
Yup, same for me. Steam is on autostart and working fine, but when I close it completely the process starts itself after a few minutes and uses 25% of CPU and about 70% of GPU, causing my fans to go to max. This issue started only a week ago or so for me, but it seems to be much longer around (maybe one of the last updates of 2014). It never was a problem before and I don't have any of the conflicting programs installed or running at the time.
Where is "this" steam process located?
Has anyone solved this? I just came across it as well.
It sounds like you have the bit coin mineing virus that is disguised as Steam.

Yup, you were right! Thanks!
Hey guys, I too thought Bitcoin was the problem with high temperatures. Turns out it was a program called cpuminer located in /Appdata/Roaming/
