Help! Account sent virus!
A Steam friend just messaged me and told me I had sent him a link (which he didn't click, thank goodness) and it came accompanied with a short message telling about a "friend". How did this happen and how can I stop it from happening again! I don't want my computer/Steam account infected with a virus, or to give others viruses.

You will have been hacked in some way. Have you downloaded something suspicious? CLicked any links? Received any odd emails? More detail about how you think you could have been hacked. Or it could have been someone in your house being a prat, but it is more likely a scammer.

I haven't downloaded anything suspicious lately. The last thing I have downloaded is the Darth mod for Total War Shogun II. It is very reputable, with it being 177 most popular on Moddb and with 9.6 review score. I don't think it could have been that, is there anyway I can search for this virus? I searched my computer and I haven't found any .scr files either.

Install malware bytes, I heard from other people here it is very good at detecting viruses, but ahven't used it myself. After that change your password.

Would you say Microsoft Security Essentials would do the job? Thats what I have currently.

Another piece of advice seen here in the forums is to change your personal info/passwords from another computer in case the one you are using now is in fact infected....
Security Essentials is very basic. I know a lot of people recommend malware bytes as a free scanner. Don't go by my word though if you think I am a scammer etc, look it up. :)

No, Security Essentials is mainly an antivirus program. It's malware detection capabilities aren't that great. Malwarebytes would be a good addition.

Also, would I have seen myself send that message if I look in the Steam log, because I don't see it there.

I got a scam chat message (a few days ago) from a friend who insisted that he was not compromised and of course did not send the message. He cannot figure this out because his machine is squeaky clean and his account was never hijacked.

He also couldn't find any log of his account sending me that chat message. I don't know what to think anymore other than this is a plague.
I searched my machine as well, with Malwarebytes, and MSE (Still scanning) and nothing has come up. I am now very worried.

Good grief. If innocent user accounts are being spoofed somehow to send the scam chat messages then any account can be suspect. I think this is entirely impossible though - at least I really hope so.
Did anything else bad happen to your friends, or did it just go away?
