New PC still low fps / ugly graphics
Hi,

I'd like to start by saying I'm not all too tech savy, like at all. Anyway, recently I bought a new PC for gaming, and while I had to scale budget and performance while choosing which one would be best to buy I had a feeling that I'd gotten a pretty nice computer out of what I'd spent on it.

And not that I feel like I haven't, this is the first time in years I get to play things like Battlefield 3/4 on good fps with the correct settings. Same going for all other newer games I was never able to play @ high fps / graphical fidelity.

Yet.. I still do feel like it's all a little bit less than what I'd hoped for. Mostly my motivation behind getting on a new system was to get rid of the jaggies that each game used to be plagued with for me, due to lack of computing power to keep some kind of anti aliasing going, that and I just in general wanted to go from playing 20-30 fps to a solid 60 fps. Yet there are only very few games in my library that even now with my new system, are running smoothly at 1080p and 60 fps. None of them will do so on ultra settings, but I can live with that. I'd just like to have non-jagged edges and "high quality" textures at 60 fps. I'm not even too interested in advanced rendering options such as the diverse types of AO or the newer kinds of anti aliasing such as TXAA and MSAA, Nvidia FXAA is fine by my standards, when it works.

Thus I'm here writing this post, and all I can think to ask is if there is something I can do to see if perhaps any of my graphical settings are wrong or something like that. (I'm totally new to the nvidia line of cards thus I've been experimenting with the 3d settings in the control panel. But everything is like i'm playing a game of gamble. I barely know what option affects what and what would be optimal for my system to be able to provide me with both great graphics and smooth gameplay.

Anyway, sorry for the long post I just wanted to be as clear as I could. Hopefully somebody with some technical prowess will read this and be able to share some advice with me on how to get more out of my system (if there is any more to get, if not end of the line i'm afraid)

Below my PC's specs for as far as I know them.

Intel i5 4460 quad core @ 3.20ghz
Nvidia Geforce GTX 745(OEM) 4GB (DDR3)
8 GB DDR3 RAM
1 TB HD + 24 GB Kingstone hybrid SSD cache

Running on windows 8.1 64 bit

Thanks to anybody kind enough to take the time to read this, and equal thanks to those whom choose to comment in any sort of progressive manner.

New PC's can come with a lot of bloatware. Can you disable unnecessary background processes and uninstall unneeded programs to make your new PC faster perhaps ?

There is a lot of imformation on the net on how to optimize a PC for gaming as you may know.

Are you sure your PC is fully up to date ? Newest drivers, OS fully updated...etc. ?

EDIT...that GPU is really your problem with this system here. I recommend getting a better GPU and PSU as a result.

Hi, thanks for replying.

I've indeed noticed a lot of random apps and stuff I'll never use installed on my windows. My fear is that if I remove something that's neccesary I might "break" my computer. I've always messed up things like finding the correct drivers and uninstalling unwanted software, thus am incredibly jittery about uninstalling stuff from my PC. Especially considering it'll take a longer than a long time for me to regain the financial room to buy a new PC / upgrade this one.

That aside though I do think I've done a fairly ok job of cleaning up my PC, deleted a few pieces of software. Installed Ccleaner and gamebooster to do their jobs (gamebooster actually helped a lot) But I'm kind of out of idea's, and am far too distrusting with most things I find on the internet that are supposed to help performance-wise. Thus my desperation post here :P

All in all I'm just kind of hoping somebody will go " Hey have you clicked <Random Nvidia Option>" and that doing something like that will make my system function better lol. I might be daydreaming, but hey a guy can dream can't he? lol.

And yes I am aware it isn't the strongest GPU out there, but I had hoped it would atleast be capable of running my games at atleast medium-high settings, was I wrong about that? If so I guess I'll start putting some money aside for a new one then :/

Edit: I guess you kind of told me I was wrong in your previous post lol, my bad. I'm just kind of sobbing atm

Dont know the cpu, but such a grafic card you dont get for a "gaming computer".
Some may run, some may run bad.

Gamebooster can possibly cause problems...see this list...

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

I am not trying to force you away from this forum but threads like this for inexperienced users can get quite long most of the time and it can therefore get a little out of the scope of this forum to be honest.

You can get all the help you need if you post this in the hardware and operating system forum here....There are savy users there that can give much good advice.

Again, I am just referring you to the best source here in the forums according to my experience so please understand.

I'll take a look at that list, see if any of those things apply to me I suppose. thanks! Reason I trust GameBooster is because it has always helped my low perforamance laptop, thus I figured why not try on my new system. :p

Also I suppose I might move this thread then, I didn't really consider where I was placing it, I just read help and tips and figured that term applied enough :p

EDIT...and if you get a stronger GPU then most likely you need a stronger PSU to power it...and never go cheap on the PSU either.

Yea...no big deal really but this forum is mostly help and tips with steam client issues and issues with running games on steam when users have problems that they see across many different games.

EDIT...it is quite possible you can make sacrifices and get the games you want to play running decent on that rig using optimal settings for the game in question....not saying you can't at all...but it will take some tweaking and getting rid of some unnecessary programs surely.

Ugh.. Well atleast I learned my lesson I guess, no more prebuilt computers for me. What a waste of hard earned money lol.. Anyway thanks for the help dude, I guess I just need to educate myself some more, as I was pretty sure this system would be fine for what I wanted, but am now realizing how wrong I was as I'm googling reviews on my GPU :/

Anyway, again, thanks for the help. I'll go and make a post on the hardware board and see if there's anybody who knows a trick or two.

Yeah very true, I've been messing around with in-game and graphic card settings more than I've been playing my actual games sofar. I've gotten some of them to run beautifully at 60 FPS such as Left 4 Dead 2, and the Dead Space series. But for example I have a lot of trouble configuring Battlefield 3 /4 to work well, it's either high FPS and lots of jaggies, or beautiful/smooth graphics and super low FPS, or medium settings and fluctuating FPS. I'm just at the edge of my own patience since I'm not sure what to do except for re-iterate all the changes I've made again and again and again till I randomly hit the right settings.

Its not that difficult to build an own computer from parts.
Watch a video or read how to.

If you dont know if a part is good, ask first (not a shop).

Next time around I'll definitely be looking into that. No more premade computers for me after this :/
