Compatibilty mode?
Every day I load steam just fine, then today, I get this error?
WHY?????????????

Anyone else get this all of a sudden? Is it something I should worry about for why it happened in the first place? (I'm going to try to undo this, but confused on why it happened in the first place)

How are we supposed to know what error you are talking about here ?

How about some more details please ? Exact wording of the error message would be a good start.

The fact that no one else is complaining about it, makes me a little more worried. Why would this error popup for zero reason!!!
The better question is, why would you ignore my questions above for zero reason.....???

EDIT...I see you posted a link above and I am guessing that is a screenshot to the error you see...sorry but I do not click links outside of Steam here...you can type the error please.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\

Right mouse click Steam.exe, view Properties -> Compatibility and see if it's running in compatibility mode.

If not, here's a fix from the boards:

If nothing else fixs it try:
Hit start->run->regedit
Go to key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
Look for a entry with your path to steam.exe
Delete that entry
If you dont find it there try HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

start Steam

I'm not really asking for a fix, I'm trying to find out why I got this message in the first place for ZERO REASON.

Also you ignored the edit.
second, I decided to ignore the error, steam looks exactly the same.

I recall the same having happened somewhere along the timeline since 2008 to me too.

It's that Windows sometimes automatically applies settings without any warning or permission.

This forum is "help and tips" so that is why I assumed you needed....um....help.

Good luck to you all the same.
Actually, the exact same thing just happened to me a few minutes ago. New steam update > steam restart > compatibility bs. Removing that registry entry fixed it, so thanks for that :)

Well, he did want to know WHY something happened.

So in a way he was asking for help: the solution to the question 'why'; rather than the actual fix.
Yes, I did need help for why.
Mornox gave me the best answer!
Not sure if it really matters but I don't think it hurts either but issues like these is why I NEVER install Steam in any program files folders on Windows. Always install Steam in its own folder all alone....just my opinion.
I never install anything in the program files folder, I use my own dedicated games and programs system to pre-empt Windows 7 overzealous security, so that didn't matter in this case. I'm wondering if there'll be more people with the same issue today, because it was directly caused by the update. Oh well, it was only a minor hassle and easily solved.

Exactly ...good idea. "windows 7 overzealous security" is a good way to put it. Thanks for the help here in case there are more problems like you described there may be.
