Steam is awful
None of my Steam games work. None.

Some used to work, now they don't. They have not for a long time and my patience is gone.

I just bought South Park: The Stick of Truth and was saddened to see when it arrived (I bought physical media hoping that Steam was not in the picture) that it required Steam. I installed it successfully, ran it and CRASH!

Ultimately, it's my mistake. I should have given up a long time ago, but every now and then I try to run a game from my Steam library, and am always disappointed.

I've searched the web. I've tried all sorts of fixes, particularly with Fallout: NV. Nothing works. Oh, I might get a little further along before a game hangs or crashes, but they always do. I've performed just about every home-grown "ritual" people claim works to get my games to run and they don't.

No, unlike one of the flamers on the support forum said: "My computer does not suck" (thanks for that help, buddy, some "community"...)-- this is the second PC I've had Steam not work on. Both have been decent PCs that have no problems in any other way.

I have an old pre-Steam license of Fallout 3 and it works fine (on both machines). The Steam version: Crash. South Park, the Stick of Truth: Crash, Fallout NV: Hang/Crash, etc. Look at the list of games in my library: None of them work. None.

Trying to get help from Steam is like talking to a wall. It's always someone else's fault/issue: talk to the game manufacturer.

No other non-Steam games on my PC fail. None. They all work fine. Not one burp or problem.

Will someone at Steam help me? No. I'm pretty technical, I can handle it and give you any information you need, but the "support" always wants to know which game: typing in "all" gets all games with "all" in the title. Everything is channelled in such a way that there is no way to get through to a person. If the solution is not a canned one, it cannot be found or won't be addressed. Support sucks, Steam.

To game manufacturers who rely on Steam for DRM protection: PLEASE use some other method to protect your products. Valve needs to go back to just making (marginal) games and let people that make good games work directly with their players and not stand in the way of a decent experience.

So far, Steam merely describes what wafts up from the pile of fecal matter that is the stack of games I have been foolish enough to buy through theses guys.

Steam does not care. They have my money, now all they have to do is ignore me, and they are doing a great job at that.

I've said it before, but this time I mean it. I'm done-- these charlatans have taken my last dollar.

If you say none of your steam games works then i would try this if i was you
install/update microsoft net framework 4.5 and microsoft visual c++ then update DirectX

link here https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=30653 in the banner to the right there says [Free PC updates] there you can click Run Microsoft Update then it will install all the newest updates/drivers = update all 3 things at once

ps. also check for windows updates inside control panel / system & security

edit: if you cancel a first time setup then you usally get these problems with every new game you wish to install using steam, and no matter how many times you have updated directx for a game then if a new game needs to download directx or other drivers then you shall never cancel that process! unless you want to reinstall those drivers again

There's a lot of possible problems but most are likely to be found on your end. The two games you mentioned were pretty popular in their day and received lots of positive reviews from users. There can be so many possible causes for what is causing the issues, from a corrupt steam install, bad drivers, OS settings/issues, current hardware , 3rd party programs (especially but not limited to security, privacy, and optimization ones ) etc... I find it odd that Fallout 3 worked out of the box for you. Before I had the Steam version I had the GFWL version I could not get to work. I then bought the Steam version on sale and its store page warns you it is not likely to work if you have modern hardware and a modern OS.

One thing you can try for SP is to use your key on Uplay and play it through there. It may not work as SP is the rare exception of a recent Ubi game not requiring Uplay

Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate it. I don't hold out much hope, though. It's just a bad platform.

Why not make a thread that actually has purpose and let's take it one step at a time and try to help you actually fix your problem(s) ?

Have you done what was suggested so far ?

I've used Steam for a long time and all my games mostly work, so i suggest either get a new pc or try to fix the issues.

Your problem is more than likely not the platform. Especially if you are having issues with multiple titles.

Sorry bud.

We have 3 accounts, all over 7 years old. Several hundreds of games, used on a lot of machines over the years.

Do as The Giving One suggests: Lets approach the troubleshooting in a methodical manner.
