[solved] Clearing incomplete downloads

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading

I started to install Dragon Age: Origins, just so I could see how much data I would need to download. After finding out I decided against installing it right now, and cancelled the download. However Steam has still set aside 12+ GB of space on my hard drive, and there is no option to delete local content for the game (more accurately, the option is grayed out and unselectable.) Does anyone know where the preallocated download is so I can remove it?

No problem my friend. I see you here trying to help all the time and I read your kind words on your profile about coming here to help. The same thing happened to me, reinstalled the game I posted about, verified the cache....failed to validate 1003 files !!..

I basically had to download it twice after the same issue you had with deleting the files but finally got it to work.

I know this is an old discussion, but I dont know how to describe the problem other than it most likely being the same. I noticed my space is being DESTROYED for no reason. the other day I had like 25 gbs left. I finally got around to updating warframe, (? it was quick so I didnt see, but that would mean it was maybe 10-70 mb) Overwatch, (around a third of a gigabyte) and ark ( the update was for 5.9 gbs, but I stopped it around 300-400 mbs)
if you add up all the data I put in today, thats around just a little over 2/3's of a gb.

so how in the world did my disk space dropp from 25gb to 8 gb? after a few thoughts the only reason I could come up with is maybe perhaps everytime I start an update on steam, it steals that amount of data and saves it for the update. Only incomplete updates means that data was never used. I did have moments where I started and paused the update multiple times to see if it was my internet being slow or if the update just wasnt downloading.

in other words, I feel like steam has been setting aside that data and never relinquishing it. Its the only conclusion that makes sense. Theres just no way.

so is there any way you can remember how you got your space back?

For this type of investigation I use utilities such as WinDirStat (Windows) or ncdu (non-Windows).

I have learned various notes through these methods such as Windows storing every installer you execute, the SXS directory, where framework/library code is stored, the use of program and app data folder, like extra graphics card drivers being stored there, temp and cache areas that can be cleared using the OS GUI application, and more.

Try those to identify what is working in the background, what it is doing, and how you can minimize it.
