This current implementation of censorship suffers from false positives, can filter inside URLs etc. You then have to quote the message to reveal the original as a workaround. To many of us, these hacks are just an annoyance.
Having it on by default but user customisable should please everyone (at least, to the highest extent possible; someone will always complain of course)
If they are playing games on steam (TF2 etc.) there isn't any censorship in them so they aren't going to be looking for bad words in the forums (I didn't post it in the steam discussion because that forum is quite dead compared to the others)
You can toggle that on/off on many things, it should be up to the user.
Just have it On by default is all.
You can find bad things via Google search, is that Google's fault?
It's against the rules to swear, you don't get a free pass just because it doesn't show. Mods can still punish your for swearing in abundance.
Same with those links.
This is true but what about what Teutep said ? Filtering malicious links is also a good feature of the "hearts" and I would not want to turn that off like you suggested here but I do like your idea otherwise.
Sorry but as someone here said, maybe this should be in discussions so forgive me.
However for general links (as Steam can't cover everything via Whitelisting and such) that is why Steam warns u about any links u click basically. It's telling u that if u wish to continue to that link, Steam bears no responsibility, as it should not have to when it is outside of Steam.
Good point. Fair enough.
So with that said, if profanity was allowed, it would go against their own preset rules by even doing so. Which means they would have to go edit all sorts of their own ToS/Forum Rules; so yea not likely to happen here.
My point is that usernames are not filtered it seems so that is a problem also in my opinion.
