Arma 3

Arma 3 won't work!!!
So, I've had Arma 3 for quite a while now. I've had lots of fun playing this game, but I had quit playing it a few months back simply out of boredom. Now, I've seen some interesting mods come out for the game and would like to try them out. I download the mods and then move to updating the game, but Steam will try to download the update but when it gets done and i try to start the game it just tries to download the update again(it did this over and over). So i try a few troubleshooting techniques(restart steam/computer, run steam as admin, verify game cache, make sure firewalls arent blocking it, etc.) but nothing seems to work. I then go to the last resort and reinstall the game, but now when the game finishes installing it tries to install it again(identically similar to the update download problem). At this point, I have no clue what to do to solve the problem. I am not sure if it is on Steam's end or Arma 3's, though I have found that it is only Arma 3 giving me this problem. I have tried the Steam support page but I can't seem to find a solution there, either. This problem is absolutely infuriating, so anything that helps will be extremely appreciated. Thanks.

  • Completely exit the Steam client.
  • Open the run dialogue by pressing windows key + r (you can also navigate here from the start menu by typing run).
  • Type steam://flushconfig then press enter. (If asked to allow this website to open a program, please click Allow or OK).
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now, launch Steam directly from the installation folder, not from a pre-existing shortcut (~C:\program files (x86)\Steam).
  • The Steam application will either appear as Steam or Steam.exe depending on whether your settings show file extensions.

This seemed to work at least for the download portion but unfortunatle now it is saying that there is an error in starting the game up. I have tried running arma3.exe as admin and that didnt work. I tried restarting steam and my computer and that didnt work either and I just have no idea what is going on anymore.

It also says that the file is not compatible with the version of Windows im running. It says to check to see if I'm using a 32-bit or 64-bit version, and I know that I'm using 64-bit.

To top it off, the Steam Support page seems to not be allowing me to login. The only way I am posting this thread is through the client itself.

If Windows says that the file you're trying to run is either incompatible with your architecture or if it says that this is not an executable file, it is obviously corrupted. Now try to verify the game cache. By the way, I would also check your harddrive for errors, because if you start getting random file corruptions is a sign that one day your drive will fail permanently, with almost no chance of data recovery.

Steam Support site uses a separate account, your Steam creditianals will not work there, so you should create a support account in order to be able to submit support tickets.

I tried verifying the game cache, and it says that absolutely nothing is wrong. I know that it can't be a harddrive problem, as I have tried to install it on my computers main drive, as well as a large external harddrive. Another thing that I find is interesting is way back when Arma 3 ran fine for me, when I double clicked the shortcut it would put me right into the game, but now when I double click the shortcut it sends me to the Arma 3 Launcher. I then click Play and it doesn't do anything. I try going into the main Arma 3 file directory and only 2/3 of the .exe files actually have the Arma 3 icon(arma3launcher.exe and arma3server.exe, the arma3.exe file doesnt have the icon, which I found interesting). I have looked up so many solutions with no results that I am completely lost at this point. I have reinstalled the game so many times it is ridiculous. I can't even be sure if the problem lies within Steam, Arma 3, or my computer.

I also know that it can't be the mods that I have downloaded, because when I reinstalled it on a separate drive, I didn't transfer any of the mods across so it should be an unmodded version of the game.
