Can't connect to steam suddenly! Help! (aswell as log in to LoL, weird coincidence?)
Hey there :),

I suddenly am not able to connect to steam anymore!
It worked fine yesterday, but no I suddenly get a 'connection timed out' error.

Weird thing is, I am also unable to login to League of Legends since yesterday (also connection timed out/unable to verify login).

I've googled the problem for LoL and steam seperately and tried multiple things, like manually setting my DNS, resetting IE settings to default (for LoL), I tried connecting to a different wifi, and a few other things.

I've tried this aswell:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1456-EUDN-2493

I don't know if reinstalling steam would fix it, but I guess I'd have to delete and redownload all of my games.. so I've kept that on hold.

When I first got this error about an hour ago I atleast got the option to start steam in offline mode, but now each time I try starting steam it says 'updating steam' -> and then a message with 'unable to update steam, please connect to internet' or something like that, and then it shuts down.

I'm participating in the steam beta, and I got an update just before all of this happened, but I'm unable to reset it now. I've tried multiple things to reset, but I need to be able to connect for that to work.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this and can tell me how to fix this.
I've got a LAN party on friday.. so I kinda need to fix this ASAP ><

I really hope you can help!

Kind regards,

CriticalRocket

'Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again'.

Well, my network connection is fine. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to post this :p

Using the file steamtmp.exe to update gives me the error 'Cannot contact the steam network. Please try later'

Have you seen this and checked your antivirus against it ? Look for other programs as well..

EDIT..if other users here except for OP are having issues, perhaps it is best for you to make your own thread so we are not spamming the OP's inbox with posts here in his thread.

Haha thats no problem ;)

Well, a few days after this happened my whole C drive crashed with an error I can't fix thanks to how windows 8 automatic repair is setup. I'm going to have to put linux on a USB and boot it to extract my files, and then do a clean install of windows ><

Have you tried the -tcp launch parameter?

  1. Right mouse click your Steam shortcut
  2. Properties
    • Change Target from
      "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe"
      to
      "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -tcp
  3. Try to run Steam again from the same shortcut.

I also have this problem and more often than not it's because steam hasn't been shut down properly. Caused by things like turning your computer off with the main power switch rather than doing a safe shut down. I've figured out that if you go onto the steam website and log in and use the online chat to speak to a friend then try to re-connect to the steam network it works just fine.

Worked for me. Turns out my router had high firewalls on and i changed to low firewall settings and logged in perfectly fine.
