Weird controller issues
So I've tried fixing this myself, but after hours of having no luck, I thought it might be time to ask for help. Basically, my controller (Switch) isn't working with some games, with the problem seeming to be that the layout/inputs somehow get messed up. The controller works fine when I'm playing Elden Ring, but when I try to play Spacemarine 2, which is the game it works worst on, all the controller is capable of doing is taking screenshots when I press the minus button. I've tried the controller with some other games like Wrestling Empire and it's still janky, but nowhere near as bad as it is for Spacemarine 2.

I've tried some of the common fixes like disabling steam input both in game properties and general settings, but that hasn't helped (I've also tried enabling steam input settings after disabling them to see if that would somehow help, but it didn't). I was able to get the controller working one time by opening big picture mode and messing around with the settings, so the controller is definitely compatible, but I haven't been able to replicate it since. I've looked for other ways to try and fix this but have come up short, which makes me think this is some weird issue that isn't that common. Would really appreciate any help!

Basically, this is quite common with using controllers that aren't designed for the job (or maybe aren't supported - call it what you will).

I game on tons of platforms, so for years I've messed around with various adaptors and using controllers. In recent years, under modern Windows it's got much easier but it's still not foolproof.

Generally, it boils down to this. Windows is set up for use with the Xbox controllers in mind. If you use something like a PS4 controller, it'll usually work, but only because it's EMULATING Xbox controllers.

This is why you will have issues like some games just not working or buttons being messed up or other weirdness as you have.

All you can do is either search around and see if anyone has either a plugin or something specifically to do better emulation, or take the plunge and get a more recognised controller, like an Xbox One joypad.

Trust me, it saves so much time making it easy. I always prefer PS controllers myself as I have smaller hands and grip issues. But when it boils down to just playing a game, I cannot be bothered with wondering whether it's going to work this time or whether the buttons are messed up.

So, frankly you're better off buying an official Xbox controller, or something like an 8Bitdo or something that is compatible.
For Switch Pro controllers I'd suggest starting with Steam Input enabled.

Then check what the controller layout looks like for Space Marine 2:
Right-click the game > Manage > Controller layout or click the controller icon or click 'View controller settings'

Click View Layout

Is it looking like this, or are things blank or...?

If it looks the same, check that the Steam Overlay is enabled for the game.
(game properties > General)

Then start the game and check if the overlay is accessible.
