Desktop controller drift
Currently, im using a nintendo switch pro controller, without drift, and no issues in-game.

However, since its my only wireless controller, i use it for windows navigation when in vr, or with my tv. Recently, no idea what caused this, only in Desktop mode, when i use either joystick as "joystick mouse", it tends to constantly drift in a seemingly random direction.
Seting up a deadzone does NOT influence this, and all the other movements, by L/R joystick and even gyro do not show any form of drift.

This essentially makes it so if the controller is turned on, i cannot use my mouse at all. Any ideas?

Yup, it's drift.

The thing to remember is that joysticks can behave differently on different utilties and it's all down to their settings. In this case, DEADZONE.

The deadzone of course, is the default resting point of the joystick where nothing happens. Over time of course, due to wear, that area grows, and most setups will accommodate this naturally. But if you have a setup or program that doesn't then you'll notice it as you are doing.

Obviously, I doubt there's any easy facility (or at least that I know of) to change the deadzone for what you want.

But you can mitigate it or fix it. You can either take apart the controller which is easy enough (I'd recommend Googling places like iFixit if you're unsure as there will be guides). Take it down to expose the circuit board and joysticks.

Now I'd recommend you either buy a can of air duster or switch cleaner (switch cleaner like Servisol is more expensive but it lasts YEARS - my current can has lasted 8 thus far). Spray this into the side and top body of the joystick potentiometers and then rotate the joysticks for a couple of minutes. Do it again and then reassemble.

All modern joysticks like these use carbon tracks and are sadly cheap and wear out easily causing issues like this. Blasting cleaner or air in there removes the dust. But it is a stop gap as it'll need doing again and will worsen obviously.

If you REALLY want a longer solution, I'd recommend looking up the brand name Gulikit as they do hall-effect replacement joysticks that do not wear.
Thank you, I'm not knowledgeable enough with controllers, and the brand names are great.

The controller is still in warranty, so I don't want to pull it apart and I didn't want to void that untill a that runs out in a few months.

I do have experience with dusting, and i recently did that for a VR controller, but my issue stemed from a SOFTWARE issue.

What i was trying to ask is "is it not possible to set deadzone on Desktop?" . With the settings being very agressive for both this controller and another, the deadzone seems to be fully ignored for both.

Thanks for the pointers tho!

Edit: is there some third party driver that can kick in before steam for this unconventional controller, to remove the drift before it reaches steam?

To my knowledge, there's no way of setting deadzone on desktop.
Try like this if you weren't already:
Set the stick to Joystick Mouse as you wish > gear icon > Deadzone Source = Custom > reposition the left marker on the slider to adjust inner deadzone

If you see an error message, back out of the configurator and retry.
