I habe the same problem. Since the last Steam-Update (which i cannot even install) it is marked by my Avira AntiVir as TR/Dropper.Gen.

i guess we can trust steam so in order to bypass this you may add an exception to avira:
right click your avira tray icon and go to "cofigure avira ..."
go to the scan options and add file object exceptions for
[YOUR_STEAM_DIRECTORY]\GameOverlayUI.exe
and
[YOUR_STEAM_DIRECTORY]\package\tmp\GameOverlayUI.exe_
You may want to search the files by clicking the "..." button

It's not Steam's fault, but Avira's. It's a falsepositive.

If you deactivate the STEAM CLIENT BETA, then it installs again the stable client.
If you do so, AVIRA will stop showing warnings for malware (TR/DROPPER.GEN)

How to disable/enable client beta:

Seems that valve have messed something up with last beta, and avira's going mad, but I'm sure they will fix it in the next beta release. So in the meantime, let's quit the client beta.

Cheers!

lame antivirus gets false positives
steam pls fix

Dear Community,
actually Avira is getting this correct. TR/Dropper.Gen is just mal-/adware. I would guess that something got changed in Steams game-advertising system and therefor it gets detedcted (correctly) as mal-/adwar because it was not yet added to the safe list. The risk quote of Dropper.Gen is very low, so just make the OverlayUI accepted by your Avira.

Me too, looks like everyone using Avira is getting it, my client will keep updating and never opening steam, had to disable it, only got it today though, first time.

Just wondering if this is going to keep occurring after today, since its has never happened previously thought steam may have potentially been compromised, with all that recent heartbleed ssl bug drama

Begin scan in 'D:\Steam\GameOverlayUI.exe' D:\Steam\GameOverlayUI.exe [DETECTION] Is the TR/Dropper.Gen Trojan Beginning disinfection: D:\Steam\GameOverlayUI.exe [DETECTION] Is the TR/Dropper.Gen Trojan [WARNING] The file was ignored.

you can try downloading the setup file for steam at the top of the page, it loads a new installer package (~28MB) which isn't alerting avira, at least it worked for me, good luck

But it's a Trojan, you sure it's safe?

It's actually a false positive. It happens from time to time for AV programs.

(For example, one high-profile false positive: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/04/21/mcafee_false_positive/ )

VIRUS FREE

I've uploaded it to virustotal.com.
It was only "detected" by Avira.
See https://www.virustotal.com/de/file/832dc6d6af334b1972f5ceced4a060dd74b99c3601c0242a08514050049aa01c/analysis/1398935831/ for more details.
Or upload it yourself.
[Edit @ 20:00]
Ok it seems fixed at least the virustotal scan is now 0/52.
