On my previous computer I downloaded a program that allowed me to have a desktop with start menu. This time I assumed I had Win 8.1, but to my surprise I do have a desktop, just not the start menu. I've tried to use the 'search' feature in the start window, but it gives me all sorts of weird results or no results at all (that's very common, in fact - very plain everyday terms it just can't seem to find or udnderstand. Weird IMO).
And it also makes me feel stupid, but do try to understand that I am 100^ self taught, I've nver known anybody in my sodial network who knew about or was interested in computers, so I've always been left to find aout and learn everything on my own and with the help of the internet and sometimes other folks on the internet.
Thing is, it takes years to learn just the basic stuff that way, and you WILL invariably have a LOT of holes in your learning, it just can't be helped whern you have no teachers or colleagues or friends who can help you out. I'm not trying to make excuses, it's just the way it is.
Just hope I'll be able to solve this problem first and at least find out where to find my computer's freaking data. When it doesn't know what I mean by the term 'My Computer... honestly that's kind of odd.
In the run command type explorer.exe and click run. This will open a windows explorer window.
It should default you to the My PC folder that lists the hard drives you have. Once you find them list the Drives and how much space they have in this format:
C:\ 325GB free of 594GB
D:\ 22.2GB free of 24.9GB
ect...
Although if what you said before is correct and you only have 221MB of space left you will need to get a bigger hard drive or if you have space on another hard drive create a steam library folder on that drive and start installing there.
Click on "Computer" or "This PC". (It was renamed to "This PC" in windows 8.1 apearently.)
You should now see at least one icon that says "Local Disk (C:)" or maybe "OS (C:)" or something like that. You may also have other letters like (D:), (I:), etc. Below each of these icons it should say something like 250 GB free of 500 GB. Those are the numbers we need to know. If you find them, post everything that is shown.
EXAMPLE:
Local Disk (C:)
137 GB free of 250 GB
Local Disk (D:)
22 GB free of 500 GB
I've learned a lot since yesterday: I have a virus (can't even ruyn a disk cleanup and now only have 128 MBspace left on the entire computer). I can't remove the virus without help from a tech support, only I can't get in contact with them because I'm being redirected back to the initial page over and over.
I also can't update Withcer III now and therefore can't play - AGAIN. Says's it's a disk writing error.
This is driving me crazy. But thanks for trying to help me out, everybody.
He may not know how to do it. This sort of thing is fairly common. Anyone who has worked in any sort of tech support capacity could tell you that. So I don't have any reason to believe he's a troll right now. Hell, I've had some people that just flat out required an on site visit if they had any kind of problem because they couldn't even find the start button on windows xp. Their computer knowledge began and ended with "Click the E to get on the internets." By that standard, he's doing pretty good. :)
I was then told this and found the option at my Steam account, but it was greyed out, so I still couldn't use it.
I restarted the PC and then it worked.
But before I found out about this I didn't even think of the possibility that the C: drive could now be very small compared to what it used to be before. I called both Microsoft and the sales company who sold me the PC. They talked with me for a while and came up with the conclusion that it was surely a virus.
I was sure that had to be it. If nothing else, they were the experts and I couldn't think of any reasons not to believe their judgement was sound.
But after going through I don't know how many antivirus programs (inclusing Viper which takes hours to finish because it goes really in-depth) I began to wonder. In the meantime I was talking with a Microsoft tech supporter who was the one that told me the E: drive is what people use on newer computers (my old computer was about 2 years old but had the old system, and the computer before that became over 6 years old before it died, and it too used the C: drive as main storage system.
Finally, I do not know ANYBODY in my life offline who I can ask about IT stuff, AT ALL! You may think I'm lying and a troll, be my guest. I have told the truth, these are the conditions under which I live. I manage, but it does represent difficulties now and then when your ownly resource is online info and asking online acquaintances for help when new things come along. And new things do, and should, come along all the time.
Thank you, Shadow.
While I can't blame others entirely for thinking I'm a troll (after all, a lot of trolling Does go on on the net all the time), I really appreciate that you give me the benefit of the doubt, and it seems to me that you have a good sense for when people are being honest even though we know it isn't always easy.
But yeah, when in your real life you mostly get crap from people around you and you constantly have to work at remaining positive, it really does make a difference when someone comes along and says someting that isn't darkened with judgmental suspicion and altogether plain habitual negativity.
Thank you, buddy.
C:\Windows\System32\diskmgmt.msc
Try not to adjust anything accidently. The scroll bars are safe.
You will see a list of all your letter labeled drives. These are technically all partitions. To understand those look to the lower part of the screen. You have physical drives "Disk 0", "Disk 1" etc... and each one can be chopped up any way you like. Don't adjust them now without bringing your computer to a nerdery, just report whats going on with each said "Disc x".
If you're having problems or have technical questions please feel free to describe/ask them here. You might also want to try the Hardware forum if you haven't already.
