Some indie bundles (Humble Bundle and Indie Gala IIRC) however take advantage of a new interface where the key isn't actually shared: you log with your steam account (the green "sign in through Steam" button) on their site and you get links you can click to redeem the game to your library - no client involved.
Hopefully every third party seller will adopt this system soon.
(1) This thread is from YEARS ago.
(2) Wrong, you can use a desktop web browser and it does work.
(3) For mobile, a typical web browser should suffice.
