Steam Client wont launch
I've installed linux hundreds of times over the years primarily due to ATI Graphics card drivers. Steam has always been a bit difficult but i've always managed to get it working. This time however, I just did a full wipe and reinstall of a dual boot Windows 7 and Linux Mint Debian 2 (LMDE2) and everything setup perfectly. Weeks of work to get everything installed and tweaked. Its running sooo smoothly. Almost Perfect... cept for steam... Grrrr... I so don't want to have to reinstall again. Any help would be most welcome. And allow me to show my appreciation :steamhappy: now before i get into the details. Thank you!

Here is the error:

$ steam

Dual 7990 (i don't think crossfire works with 2 dual gpu's.) ive tried but haven't been able to get any increase in benchmarking results, and some games don't work with crossifre at all... ATI and linux:steamsad:! OK, done rantings. sorry... I should say this has never been much of an issue before, so i don't think this is a GPU based issue, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time i've been completely wrong.

Yes I can very well see that you are versed in the technical field and I sincerely hope that I was in no way disrespectful to you and I am sure you don't feel that way at all here. As you touched on, I was just trying to be complete in my suggestions to attempt to cover any confusion that might arise from our communication here.

At this point I think I can agree with you about the missing directroy or file. Perhaps asking about it in the hardware and OS forum and linking this thread there could be a possibility for you to get this sorted out. I am personally very sorry that I have failed to help you fix the issue, as I just saw your thread with no replies as of yet and so I thought I would give your issue a shot.

Please forgive me for suggesting for you to take any steps that may have seemed unnecessary at the time or do in fact seem to have been unnecessary now. I wish you the best of luck with this issue and again, I am sorry I did not help you with it.
zaileion Aug 17, 2015 @ 7:39pm
This is also interesting:

I looked up a portion of the error "steam.sh: line 756: 16046 Segmentation fault" in google and came up with a few similar errors. Funny thing is their all relatively recent. some just a few months old.

Here are some links with similar issues:

@zaileion

Yes I did actually see that last linked forum you have above when I was trying to search for the error myself here a little while ago. The AMD driver one seems promising.
zaileion Aug 17, 2015 @ 7:43pm
Your assistance has been excellent. Thanks for the help and i will await further posts in the Operating systems and hardware section here http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/11/537405286658777912/

You were in no way inconsiderate, or disrespectful. Superb effort and i thank you again.
The Giving One Aug 17, 2015 @ 7:46pm
That is very kind of you indeed. One last suggestion if you will, please.

Perhaps a title more suiting to your problem in the hardware forum would be better. Perhaps adding "Linux" or something would get more attention. Just a suggestion, and good luck to you always.
zaileion Aug 17, 2015 @ 8:06pm
I edited the title in the Hardware section of the post as you suggested to include "Linux" as well as the portion of the error that i seem to get the most relevant results when searching Google. thank you for the suggestion.
zaileion Aug 22, 2015 @ 8:31am
So i uninstalled the ATI drivers against every shred of discontent within my being, and uninstalled steam, and reinstalled steam, and reinstalled my graphics drivers, and reconfigured my graphics drivers. I was successful as Steam now works. Pardon me if i must insist this is F|_|(k|n& idiotic!!! plain and simple... 14 hours +/- of steady work without backups, but took me 4 hours because i know enough to backup the necessary files. I will indicate the best files to backup and how to do so in the future and will link to the new post...

I just want to let everyone know that i posted this issue with Steam Support over a week ago, replied with my discoveries and steps along the way and NEVER received a response. WTF!? Steam Support if a joke and entirely worthless!!

Here is a copy/paste of my steam support post: As you can see NO RESPONSE FROM STEAM AT ALL!!

Are you using Catalyst AI for your quadfire ?
It is on the list of problematic programs, so just wanted to pass that on here to you.

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

About Steam support, they are most likely quite backed up these days so your issue may not be at the top of their list and/or you may be in a very long waiting line, you see.

As my frustration builds, i stop get tea once i reach explosion point so as not to act inappropriately on forums where all ages and types of people attend. But, i must express my ever building exhaustion with this situation.

I'm certain its not Catalyst since steam was just working less than an hour ago... All i did was edit the xorg.conf file to re-position the mouse pointer location on initial X startup... But to answer your question about Catalyst for crossfire, Crossfire options aren't available in Linux version of Catalyst. Activating crossfire is via .conf files and bash only.

Here are the commands i used to activate crossfire
To list Adapters:
$ aticonfig --lsch
0. 05:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
1. 06:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
2. 09:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
3. 0a:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series

(to activate multiple GPU Chains)
$ aticonfig --adapter=0,1,2,3 --cfa

(to bind all GPU's together in a sense creating one big graphics card)
$ aticonfig --adapter=0,1,2,3 --crossfire=on

Logged out and back in and tried Steam after reading some news feeds and it wouldnt launch. I was just playing CIV Beyond Earth for 2 hours this AM...

ANyone know what the error above (# 27) means? ANy ideas that might point me into the right directions.. I dont know how to read error codes of such type...

Please forgive me here as I am only trying to help with suggestions and perhaps my ignorance in your OS is actually more frustrating to you but allow me the leeway if you will, please.

This statement above seems to suggest to me that you still have Catalyst AI installed, even if certain features are not available in Linux, as you also stated.

So if in fact you do have that installed, is it not possible to simply install the drivers only for your AMD GPU's and no other ATI software, such as with Nvidia for example, you can install only the driver and Physix, and not the other features of the Nvidia package, as in a custom install.

Again, please forgive my ignorance in Linux and trying to think of possible solutions for you. Have you updated your thread in the Hardware and OS forum with these error posts ?

The entire problem is the ATI drivers and Steam. make changes to xorg.conf then reinstall ati drivers and steam, uodate kernel then reinstall ati drivers and steam, do anything regarding ati drivers at all and remove steam and reinstall. Youll have to pardon my expression of frustration!! Ive been using computers for 30+ years and this happens to be one of the most poorly developed piece of software ive ever had the un-pleasure of working with. Unfortunately Valve is the only company dedicated to gaming on Linux so i must give credit where its due. Whatever the issue is, Pay the money, contact AMD,, or do whatever it takes to get Steam working with ATI. 1/2 the gaming population use ATI GPU's can easily game... FIX THE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ISSUES!!

Again, i must apologize for my inappropriate language, but come on people. this ♥♥♥♥ is a real joke,,, On top of it all there are no Steam support agents, no phoner number to call, no direct chat with steam support... nothing...
