He is lying to you so he gets the knife for free. This reason is not worth the risk for you, that is his problem not yours. Sell it on the market to someone else.
If you trade right you can see exactly what you are being offered, you can always check if the item is the thing offered is actually what the other person said it was and what they ask for and so on. If you use gifting instead of trading there is risk with them chargebacking and so on. The links i posted above shows many types of scams.

Oh yeah this makes him sound really trustworthy.
You cant fit it in a trade window, don't do it. Rep means nothing, you can beg for rep, you can do it yourself with fake accounts, you can delete all the posts saying "omg you scammed me good and proper'.
