Doing the things you have stated here is not wise at all.
Those are known for being home to scammers and phishers and seen many times here in posts from users that visited those sites.
Turning off that email confirmation will make sure you don't get any scammed items returned.

So you are saying that you cannot log into Steam to set your new gmail account as your Steam email account ?
Have you checked all the folders like spam and such ? Made sure Steam is an exception for your email account so not to filter it out ?
